The F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, asked the Justice Department this weekend to publicly reject President Trump’s assertion that President Barack Obama ordered the tapping of Mr. Trump’s phones, senior American officials said on Sunday. Mr. Comey has argued that the highly charged claim is false and must be corrected, they said, but the department has not released any such statement.

Mr. Comey, who made the request on Saturday after Mr. Trump leveled his allegation on Twitter, has been working to get the Justice Department to knock down the claim because it falsely insinuates that the F.B.I. broke the law, the officials said.

A spokesman for the F.B.I. declined to comment. Sarah Isgur Flores, the spokeswoman for the Justice Department, also declined to comment.

Mr. Comey’s request is a remarkable rebuke of a sitting president, putting the nation’s top law enforcement official in the position of questioning Mr. Trump’s truthfulness. The confrontation between the two is the most serious consequence of Mr. Trump’s weekend Twitter outburst, and it underscores the dangers of what the president and his aides have unleashed by accusing the former president of a conspiracy to undermine Mr. Trump’s young administration.

This is all getting to be beyond incredible.

From your link: "A spokesman for the F.B.I. declined to comment."

Who's the source? Adam Schiff from California? He's already been caught in some lies about this. Or maybe Senator Chris Coons from Deleware, that was on Fox News Sunday today and when pressed by the moderator had to sidestep and shimmy to admit that what he had been saying on CNN and MSNBC was completely without basis (a lie) and that he had no facts to substantiate his claims. Go to the 16:04 mark in the video below and watch up to 19:25 when he is asked about his previous claims he made and whether he has PROOF, he begins his dance at the 20:10 mark.

A lot of people fail to realize that "government official" and "senior official" is such a malleable term, that it could be anyone.
Imagine if a "government official" claimed that Obama was a Muslim, Kenyan.
Now change that to, Michelle Backman claims that.

It's complete crap to believe these people without evidence.

At this point, we have the NYT with no evidence and Trump with no evidence. If there were a contest to see who could tell the most provable lies per month between the NYT and Trump, Trump would win hands down, so at least for now, I'm going with the NYT.

Unfortunately, we're not on the game show, "The Biggest Lyer."
I'll withhold my judgement of what really happened, when someone releases some hard evidence.

I'm really just pointing out the difference between, news headlines.
How the NYT, is somehow not required to show evidence, but Trump is.
That people will believe it, regardless of that glaring omission.

The problem here is Trump has lied so much, that no one believes him anymore.

The MSM has had some problems here too, but in relation to their general accuracy, their record is magnitudes better, enough so as to see them as normally accurate. This is in stark contrast to Trump's Tweets, which seem to be normally inaccurate!

Public perception within the general body politic is not discerned to the high degree you suggest you use, nor will it ever likely be.

So Trump pretty much ****ed himself here, IMO.

Who lies more isn't a place to plant your flag on.
If Trump is lying, then so be it.

With that said, it's fairly discerning to see an alleged unbiased news source decide to manipulate their headlines in a way to push public perception.
The onus is on these "unbiased" news sources to be unbiased and they're not.
We already know Trump has a bias.

If one claim is made without evidence and they highlight it, they should do so with all claims.
Even their own.

I'm not 'planting flags' or claiming moral ground or elsewise.

I'm simply providing political analysis:

Trump's non-stop lying and theatrics, vs the MSM's comparative higher accuracy rate, means Trump has set himself up to succumb to anything the media (or others) present against him - whether accurate or not.

In other words: He's screwed the pooch!

MSM's screw ups are easier to hide though.
The numerous inside sources that claimed to know who his cabinet picks were and they were wrong.
Just as one example.

They're deception is harder to notice, although I think the difference in headlines is fairly obvious to me.
I don't believe either is a source of credible information, without evidence and I just won't give them leeway on this

If Coon said there are transcripts in existance and that information was gathered under FISA, then perhaps Coon needs to be questioned about exposing classified material.

Alright, fair point.

There are only two options. Either Trump lied or the FBI director Comey lied.

This is huge. One of them is going down. Place your bets at the window.

Comey has a reputation as an honest guy. Trump not so much. So If I was a betting man........

Seems that way.

This might be some epic battle!

My gut feeling is DOJ-FBI-CIA would prevail over Trump.

I suspect Trump's best hope would be to have the overwhelming support of the majority of the populace, in a manner that can over-ride the three-letter-agencies.

But unfortunately for him, he's already insulted and pissed-off much of the country's citizens that could come to his aid in a show of support.

No surprises here; as I stated in another thread: Trump has basically committed a 'partial political suicide'

this is a self inflicted political wound

This is actually a GOOD THING; those that have been shoved sooooooooooooo far up Trump's *** like a tick can now FINALLY see a small sliver of just how unstable Trump actually is

Former Trumpettes are NOW finally starting to get a whiff of how smelly the bitter stinking Trump truth really is

anyone have a gas mask? smells like **** in here ...............

70% of Trump statements are lies. Comey is the Director of the FBI. That is a position that typically demands considerable integrity.

James Clapper stated there was no FISA request on Meet the Press this morning.

This is looking like another childish tweet from the Delusionist-in-Chief. Who elected this buffoon?

Most likely this is going to be another "last night in Sweden" thing.

My god man, you are president of the United States. What are doing getting your facts from Fox TV when you have access to all government intelligence and military intelligence?

Does this guy even realize how much power he has?

A while back, I thought the Oligarchy might just kill Trump.

Apparently they thought that would be too obvious and they're going to try this silent coup.

Half the American people are with them.

The other half have a lot of guns.

How will this play out?

God knows.

Do you recall all those times Obama said, "oh...I heard it on the news"?
