The ratings are in, and President Donald Trump's first address to a joint session of congress attracted fewer viewers than President Obama's in 2008.

Nielsen reported that 43.43 million viewers watched Trump's address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, nearly 9 million less viewers than President Barack Obama's speech in 2009 had.

More than 10 million of those viewers watched Trump's speech on Fox News, according to a report by Adweek.

President Barack Obama's first speech to a joint session of Congress in 2009 drew 52.37 million viewers, according to Nielsen.

This just shows that people weren't as interested in what he had to say. It doesn't speak to the quality or veracity of his presentation or to the number of people who may have agreed with him.

Besides, the number of people who 'consumed' the speech is almost certainly higher than the number who 'consumed it via a cable network that could track what they watched'.

As a side note, I did not watch it on TV, but I did read it and may watch it online later tonight (my channels come over the air so my viewership wouldn't have counted anyway).

More childish than that last sentence? What's wrong with you?

Lucky for you there's plenty of threads that are perfect to you.

Have a nice day.

i suspect it is largely the same crowd who failed to show up at the polls in 2016 but who were there in '08

Not that I much care and Obama was the more pleasing orater. But he had nothing much to say that he hadn't said before, while for Trump the opposite was true. It was unknown, what he might say and it could easily have been important for every living American. In other words the public seems to be as interested as it was in who would be elected.

So what is the point?

Does this mean we are in for eight years of petty comparisons?

Or does this mean it is okay to bring up President Obama's past when discussing President Trump?

I suppose it is also possible that somebody actually cares about how many people were watching TV that night.

It's logical that Obama would of gotten more viewers.* He was different the first articulerte, bright, clean, mainstream black candidate , the storybook man.

I wonder what the numbers are who watched on something other than traditional cable or tv? For all we know it could've blown Obama's speech out of the water

First black President giving address to Congress. Of course it would be less.

The point is probably measuring it against Clinton and both Bush's.
