In a wide-ranging interview that shied away from directly criticizing the current commander in chief, former President George W. Bush said it's critical for the media to hold accountable “people who abuse their power." He also rejected the current administration’s controversial immigration policy.

"I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. We needed the media to hold people like me to account," Bush told TODAY in an exclusive interview. "Power can be very addictive and it can be corrosive, and it’s important for the media to call to account people who abuse their power."

I can't wait to see Don Tweeto's Tweet about "W" comment.

There is quite a difference between reporting the news and making up the news. The left loves making up the news and promotes that happening just to divert from the Trump promises made and promises being kept.

I agree with Bush but not with the way the media is making things up and promoting the unrest in this country today. The Russian story is a non story, the popular vote is a non story, the economic activity, job creation, and national security EO's are being ignored. The left will never be happy without chaos that they are promoting

But the Left hates the former president. YOU know you can't believe a thing that horrible man says...

Now I'll listen to what he said so I can see how you and perhaps the media are mischaractering the interview.

Edit... Is this how GWB rejected DTs immigration policy?
"I am for an immigration policy that is welcoming and upholds the law," he said when asked if he favored or opposed the policy

Thanks for not disappointing.

How long did it take for you to interview that many people?

Or are you rounding up?

funny, not funny haha but funny weird that of all people G W Bush would make such comments concerning accountability.

the press coddled G W like a baby after 9/11 for YEARS, never pried into the lies concerning Iraq until many years after the fact.

Chaos? the Middle East was completely destabilized as a consequence of the 2003 Iraq War.

we are STILL seeing the unintended consequences of the power vacuum created by Bush removing Saddam.

the Arab Spring aka revolts were a result of Bush's Iraq War.

Amazing how the press completely failed to ask the tough questions of G W Bush.

even more strange that Bush himself would have an opinion about the press questioning those with the power to bring the world such chaos.

I actually find this all absurd .......

Most likely: "W has become a Democrat lakey. Sad." or something similar. That being said, Go Bush!

Critical thinkers all! Go Democrats!

And the right will never be happy unless they can play victim.

They seem quite content with the current leader of the free world giving us a constant stream of lies, half truths, 'mis-statements', exaggerations, and petty childish rants...

But let one of thousands of daily reports be inaccurate and OMG the lying media!!!!! :doh

The popular vote would be a non story- if Trump STFU! More and more Republicans are calling for investigations on the Russian 'story'. Job creation is a PR stunt AT BEST. The 'National Security' that the COURTS shot down is being ignored because we have a child's ego running the nation. Trump needs to get out of his own way, or at least oil his fine tuned machine... :peace

Big Strawman.... who said we shouldn't have the media?

We had an election, you lost so now how it is the right being a victim? The left always has to be the victim when they don't get their way. It is the left whining and complaining about the popular vote win yet ignoring the Congressional Popular vote which gave Republicans Control of Congress

Constant stream of lies is the claim of the left to divert from what is necessary in this country, economic growth, job creation, and national security??

I am still waiting what it is about the Russian story that is an issue? Job creation, economic growth, and national security being a PR STUNT???? Wow, absolutely stunning what your priorities are showing exactly why the Democrats are no longer in power

G. W. Bush was a pretty darn good President and has comported himself as an even better example of how an ex-President should act. President Trump could find counsel in far worse quarters than those of the Bush family as it relates to serving your country with dignity and decorum.

As for the media, President Bush is correct - however, that assumes a media that is not warped in its coverage of news and in the depths of its biases. The way in which the media has attacked all things related to this new administration seriously calls into question their ability to be honest brokers of news.

Why is it ok for Trump to make up the news but not ok for the media to call him out for making up the fake news?

Big Strawman.... who said we shouldn't have the media?

It's the obvious implication when the POTUS calls the entire media the "enemy of the people" and "the opposition party". If the people who report what you do in office is a threat to you, you're not doing what you're supposed to be doing.

Hard to understand why you posted this. For years, so many have described GWB as an incompetent liar, Hitleresque, who used his power to revenge insults to his father and others. And now we have an article that basically presents the GWB that many of us knew-a compassionate person who always tried to do what was best for the country. And hardly a far right person or even much of a conservative.

GWB does make the same mistake of many in thinking that an attack on 5 specific media outlets, 4 based in NYC and one in Atlanta, is somehow an attack on "The Media" with 1000s of outlets. But then he always simply wanted to keep the peace and not ruffle feathers.

What news has Trump made up and be careful reporting what the media tells you. You don't see a problem where with the media today? Have you read the NY Times story? tell me what was illegal in that story and why it dominates the news today in the leftwing world?

Man, how bad do things need to be for George Bush to be making sense?

He never called the entire media the enemy of the people. The tweet in question listed all the news outlets that Trump was speaking towards.

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!"

This is in fact a great time to point out that this error people on the left keep making about the comment was originally said by places like CNN.

Hmmm....Just wondering Cigar why you chose not to report on the entire context of what former President Bush said in response to the question....? His full response went as such, and bear with me I am transcribing directly from the video, since Today has not made a transcript available yet....

Matt Lauer: "But, there's enormous division right now, and President Trump says that he hopes to unify the country, have you, in the first month, seen him do or say anything that in your opinion would be an attempt to heal the wounds of the election?"

President Bush: "Well first of all, it's only been one month, he has 4 years. Secondly, I think you have to take a man at his word, that he want's to unify the country, and we'll see whether he's able to do so. It's hard to unify the country though, with the news media being so split up. When I was President, you know, you mattered a lot more, because there was like three of you, and now there all kinds of information being bombarded out, and people can say things anonymously, and it's just a different world...."

So, why'd you leave that out of your context? Because, I know you would never skew anything out of context to create a narrative now would you?

Actually, the interview is quite evenhanded and quite the way one would expect a President to speak.

That is extremely funny coming from a poster who ranted and railed over a previous lost election... :lamo

Trump is constantly distracting from the 'people's business' with his childish tweets and silly lies.

Congress isn't a national popular vote. Many right wing senators get elected in very sparse populated states. Never underestimate the power of greed and bigotry when appealing to people (I just didn't think THAT many would respond to it), but don't gloat too much, history shows nothing in politics is a lock.

You dodge some more- I said the job creation 'wins' are silly LITTLE actions- far more PR than effect.

Economic growth has been going on for some time now, did ya miss that???

National Security???? That half butted EO was a dog that couldn't hunt, got sent back to the Rabid Right porch embarrassingly fast. Right out of the gate it's the Trump Amateur hour!:doh

We do need security, we have had security- but in a free and open DEMOCRACY there are limits on what an 'over-reaching' government can do (GAWD I love being able to use the dribble the rabid right spouts right back at 'em!)

I have no doubt many Trump echoes see no story to the Russian question. Howsomever many in Trump's party think otherwise and they are launching multiple investigations. Issa, no liberal is calling for a Special Prosecutor...

We live in interesting times... :peace

Of course, the answer is obvious.

Just like the left's MSM partners, context has no place when attempting to invent a narrative that doesn't exist.

This should be the great concern to all citizens. A press that has become little more than a propaganda wing of a political party and agenda.

More concerning still, people willing to pick up their ball and run with it.
