Democrats pick Tom Perez to lead party against Trump, Republicans | Reuters

U.S. Democrats elected former Labor Secretary Tom Perez as chairman on Saturday, choosing a veteran of the Obama administration to lead the daunting task of rebuilding the party and heading the opposition to Republican President Donald Trump.

Members of the Democratic National Committee, the administrative and fundraising arm of the party, picked Perez on the second round of voting after one of the most crowded and competitive party leadership elections in decades.

The showdown between candidates backed by the establishment and progressive wings of the party echoed the bitter 2016 primary between Clinton and Sanders, a rift Democrats will try to put behind them as they turn their focus to fighting Trump.

No olive branches today from the Democrats. The Democrats have echoed their message to progressives: "We don't want you in the party." And they will continue to lose elections. Look out establishment Dems.. progressives are going to primary you.. and if Democrats want to beat Republicans they better select grassroots candidates free from corporate entanglements.

Looks like business as usual in the Democratic party. Actually, not a bad strategy.. Trump's bound to implode by the midterms.

I wonder what Ellison can do with the deputy chair position? It was smart for Perez to put him there. I'm not too upset about this decision.

Perez is eloquent. I'll give him that. DWS had problems because she is a bad liar. As long as Perez understands a couple things:

1. This past election was a rejection of HRC and Clintonianism
2. American politics is at an inflection point and young people and independents who lean Democrat will bring their enthusiasm and energy into the Democratic party if you select grassroots candidates with progressive platforms

He can do wonders for the party if he understands these 2 points.

I think the Ellison deputy chair, was a consolation prize. I'm not sure, maybe Ellison can do some outreach.

Same old Democratic Party. Big money and establishment politics. How soon will it be before they all begin kissing Hillary's ring?

The Democratic Party is as worthless as tits on a bull.

That's funny, I was getting a different message.

Moderates and rural folks? Who the hell are they?

The 50 state strategy out the window as soon as Perez and Ellison led the Party.

Unfortunately, every indication that the Democrats are sane, rational people not stuck inside the beltway echo chamber is fading fast. Honestly, I assert this to be 100% true. The Democrats would have rather lost with HRC than won with Bernie Sanders.

Moderates and rural folk are pleased with Perez?

As a Democrat, how did you come to that conclusion?

It seems that the Sanders wing of the Democrat party is being asked to take another one for the team. That being said, from what I saw of the candidates, I really think the Democrats missed the boat by not giving more attention to Jamie Harrison. He struck me as being the brightest bulb on the stage most of the time.

Not "would have", "did".

When diversity within the party is apparently how far to the Left of Obama we go, it's not exactly sending strong messages.

Called it.
The elites particularly enjoyed Perez' involvement with sabotaging Bernie Sander's campaign. I'm pretty sure if anything that's what will put him over the top.

Are you saying this guy will do better because he is a better liar?

That's the best case scenario.

However in light of DWS, and the fact that the DNC appointed Donna as interim despite the fact that she was fired from CNN for passing questions to Hillary's campaign and was an egregiously biased advocate of the woman, there is essentially no cause for optimism. Anyone who the establishment favours is in all probability toxic for the party.

As said previously, in all likelihood we're in for another self-immolating round of insider opacity, insular primaries, backroom DNC dealings and bias, and justified cynicism and distrust within the party; exactly what the Dems need to unify and move forward.

Tom Perez is a progressive.
Today, the Democratic Party fought over if one is supposed to be an urbanite professional liberal or an urbanite left-wing populist.

Diversity in action.

I had the impression democrats thought hillary would win

If repubs had run a centrist like jeb budh or kasich hillary might have won in spite of her flaws

However I agree that tje democrat party is farther left than it has ever been

Bernie might be too old to run again but a full blown socialist might be the best reflection of where democrat voters are today

Elizabeth Warren discredited herself when she aligned with Hillary, so the Bernie Wing is gonna reject her obvious ambitions in 2020.

I wouldn't be so sure, she'd have the backing of the establishment as she's proven her loyalty to it in the 2016 Dem primaries, while still retaining relative popularity among the progressive wing, whether rightly or wrongly.

To her credit she didn't actually carry water for anyone until the primaries were over, but yes, as a Sanders supporter her silence during the primaries definitely felt like a knife in the back, where she chose her party and ambitions over her principles, particularly as Massachusetts was so close and she could have easily clinched a win for Bernie there.

As a Democrat, how did you come to that conclusion?

Because the Democrats pushed Hillary down everyone's throats when she had serious character flaws and political baggage. They had a chance to embrace a platform that meant change. Campaign finance reform, transform our energy system, that means no more fracking money, end the funding of terrorist groups in the Middle East, get on board with true progressive health care reform. They have a chance to be real progressives but, they prove over and over again that they are the party of the 1% as much as the republicans are. There's 1 party of economics in this country and on the outside the Democrats and Republicans contrast with each other on civil rights.

How did I conclude that the Democratic establishment prefers Trump to Bernie?

Because they pushed HRC down our throats when we warned them that she was going to lose to Trump. They cheated during the primaries. They did everything possible to silence Bernie who would have made short work of Trump. All throughout the primaries all we heard was "pie in the sky" "how much is Bernie hurting Hillary?" "Bernie can't win." Meanwhile Bernie is smashing every fundraising record. The media counting the superdelegates from day 1. The superdelegates existence. Bernie winning WY by a landslide but, taking less Wyoming delegates than Hillary to the convention. The democrats are change on the outside, continuity on the inside.

And I'm sorry for painting with a broad brush. I'm talking about the NY and DC elite Democrats. The establishment Democrats in congress, governorship, and the media.

I voted for Bernie in the Florida Primary.

Newly elected DNC Chair, Tom Perez, and his Deputy Chair, Keith Ellison, have joined forces for the good of the Democratic Party. They seek unity in the party. I support their efforts. May those of us in support of these new DNC Leaders commit to the next step of formulating reasonable and achievable goals! May our Best Times lie ahead one small step at a time, one day at a time!

Congratulations to Tom Perez and Keith Ellison!

There is no honeymoon, and an establishment pick doesn't deserve one; guilty until proven innocent. I'm going to see what he does before applauding.

So you are not a Democrat speaking from you own experience then?

And you are NOT talking from close personal experience with friends who are Democrats and shared that belief with you?
