FBI refused White House request to knock down recent Trump-Russia stories

I prefer known sources but I understand in reporting you can't always get that. Especially when reporting sensative information that puts people lives and/or jobs at risk.

While I agree information that comes from an anonymous source shouldn't be considered as "proof", when did this absolute rejection of all anonymous sources begin? It was always a time honored practice. Entire court cases have been fought over the right to protect one's sources. We are basically telling sources that if they are not willing to lose their job or get sued or go to jail then we aren't even going to listen to what they have to say.

When? when you are a source who is constantly being shown to be lying, wrong, and producing fake news.

I'm going to need a better source than the Clown News Network.

If the public got tax returns from him it would show how THEY and everybody else that suspects that asshole have been exactly right all along. It's not just a leftie thing dude. Republicans AND military people are getting pretty fed up with Trump and his asinine behavior and juvenile commentary. He's putting the county at risk in a time of war and he acts like he thinks he's ordering office personnel to go get him some more coffee so that he can make more brilliant decisions.

The "left"; you make me laugh dude.

yes its a left thing, because i dont hear anyone but you and those people like you asking for tax returns, which are not even required by law.

i am glad i made you laugh, because most of the time your unhappy because America is not going your way.

They all get it from the same place. Although it would be interesting to see who ran it first.

There is NO WAY the White House asked the FBI to lie. Oh, for slander laws against these media darlings. Maybe someday. Anonymous sources is just another way to lie.

This is the most despicable post I've ever seen from you. Shame.

More fake news by CNN, is my thoughts. If there was something here then it would have been looked at and address while Obama was in office.

It was and it is. Trump has been the subject of FBI investigation for years. As far as we know it continues but with greater urgency because Trump is now POTUS.

You want fake news? Trump maintains that he has no business connections with Russia. Artful dodger that he is, he did not say that he didn't have any business connections with Russians, Russian crime lords or naturalized Russians. Which he has.

Trump promised during his campaign that he would release his taxes. More fake news, he didn't and he will not. Why? We certainly don't know. But if he is in business with Russians or if he has been we might know that, wouldn't we?

We know that Russian money bailed Trump out by the hundreds of millions when Trump was facing his 5th bankruptcy. What were their motives for bailing Trump out? What did Trump agree to do? Does massive debt make a politician vulnerable? Oh, hell yeah.

Trump said that his campaign staff never had meetings with Russians prior to the election. Oops, fake news again from the WH.

Trump said that Flynn did nothing wrong but left the WH over an issue of trust. Then we find that Flynn did discuss lifting sanctions with the Russian ambassador. Oh my god, more fake news from the WH about the Trump administration and Russians!

So which news outlet do you want to read this on?

Just curious...are you guys going to scream "FAKE NEWS" for the rest of time? For instance, when CNN reports anything not complimentary about Maxine Waters, Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, will you deem it fake news? And if they say anything complimentary about Trump, anyone in his administration, any Republican, etc., will you decide it's fake news and just ignore it?

Pence has gotten aboard the "fake news!" train.

It was evident it was going to be the this way since the 2nd (or 3rd?) debate between Clinton and Trump. After Clinton called Trump "Putin's puppet" Trump immediately retorted "No! You're the puppet!!"

What if the source is named but lies anyway, such as Trump or Kellanne Conway?

This is the most despicable post I've ever seen from you. Shame.

Save it. Your attempt at shaming is a waste of time. Perhaps you think headlines in some of our rags that accuse the Pope of child abuse are a proud example of freedom of the press. Many of the rest of us don't.

What you are determined to call lies, most of the rest of us know they were stupid mistakes.

Well, there's talk now - by a Republican no less, of subpoenaing Trump's tax returns, which I'm sure are going to very revealing about ties to Russia. So there's your wonder; like everybody else's tongue 'n cheek suspicions about this nonsense. Trump better be careful and start acting presidential, like he promised everybody he would; "I'll be so presidential, you won't believe it"... or he's gonna get run right outta office.

He may quit before that however to KEEP his tax returns from being revealed.

They can't randomly subpoena President Trump's tax returns. There's still that pesky ol' probable cause thing.

I find it interesting that the story about Trump asking the FBI to quash stories about the Russian connection breaks at midnight, and at 4:36am Trump has this to say:

"The FBI is totally unable to stop the national security "leakers" that have permeated our government for a long time. They can't even find the leakers within the FBI itself. Classified information is being given to media that could have a devastating effect on U.S. FIND NOW"

Sorry, Maggie, but it's true.

Hi Cardinal....That question goes both ways does it not? What if it is revealed that these media outlets have been on a coordinated campaign to smear, lie, and ultimately take down a POTUS? What then?

It is not true. I know you wish it was, but I wish I was 5'9". Not going to happen for either of us.

Trump just admitted it was true.

Clinton is Putin's puppet?

This gets curiouser and curiouser, don't it?

:lamo Oh, stop. I will never be 5'9".

You're trying to make a joke, but do you not think it's curious that after the FBI leaks the fact that Trump asks the FBI to quash the Russian connection story, Trump just four hours later screams at the FBI to control its leaks?

this is yuge!!!

washington (cnn)the fbi rejected a recent white house request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between donald trump's associates and russians known to us intelligence during the 2016 presidential campaign, multiple us officials briefed on the matter tell cnn.

White house officials had sought the help of the bureau and other agencies investigating the russia matter to say that the reports were wrong and that there had been no contacts, the officials said. The reports of the contacts were first published by the new york times and cnn on february 14....

The direct communications between the white house and the fbi were unusual because of decade-old restrictions on such contacts. Such a request from the white house is a violation of procedures that limit communications with the fbi on pending investigations.

The same white house official said that priebus later reached out again to mccabe and to fbi director james comey asking for the fbi to at least talk to reporters on background to dispute the stories. a law enforcement official says mccabe didn't discuss aspects of the case but wouldn't say exactly what mccabe told priebus.

Late thursday night, white house press secretary sean spicer objected to cnn's characterization of the white house request to the fbi.

"we didn't try to knock the story down. We asked them to tell the truth," spicer said. The fbi declined to comment for this story...."

oh...so, priebus didn't want the fbi to spill the beans about trump's ties to russian intelligence, eh? Hmm, i wonder why.

Thoughts?

obama led shadow government!!!!!!!!!!

First you're using the word slander wrong ... it's libel.

Second I'm a journalist and anyone calling for the law to Crack down on my colleagues for doing their jobs deserves all the scorn and shame they get for it.

Lots of people do Despicable things under the protection of the First Amendment. They take scandalous photographs from the bushes of celebrities. They publish outright falsities like bat boy. The post stupid s*** on message boards.

We have to tolerate those abuses because there are more important freedoms at stake: most importantly the freedom to hold our officials accountable.

You can dispute the report and its sources all you want. But when you start calling for the criminalization of journalism, and you aligned yourself with tyrants and despots. And you declare yourself an enemy of the freedoms that I fight everyday to preserve.

Then nothing. It would be wrong of them, but they have the right to do it

Freedom of the press, in my opinion, should not be absolute.

Anonymous source equals completely made up.

It's so ironic that newspapers use anonymous sources all the time. HOWEVER, all letters to the editor must be signed. Seems like a goose/gander issue to me...
