LONDON -- A suicide bomber who attacked a military base in Iraq this week was a former Guantanamo Bay detainee freed in 2004 after Britain lobbied for his release, raising questions about the ability of security services to track the whereabouts of potential terrorists.

He was one of 16 men paid a total of 10 million pounds (now worth $12.4 million) in compensation in 2010, when the British government settled a lawsuit alleging its intelligence agencies were complicit in the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, according to the officials.

Ex-Guantanamo bay prisoner Abu Zakariya al-Britani, paid settlement by Britain over detention, was suicide bomber at Iraq base - CBS News

This man was a terrorist the whole time, and used his government (UK) to free him from detainment at Gitmo, and then extorted them for $12 million. His final deplorable act was blowing himself up in order to kill troops in Iraq.

This illustrates the willingness of a lot of stupid westerners to believe criminals who claim that they aren't radical terrorists, but are really just peaceful and religious citizens.

This provides just one of many reasons why torture is a **** idea. Easier to keeps tabs on someone who isn't a ****ing millionaire.

It's shocking and said that the British government paid this man. No doubt he used the funds in fueling the attack and supporting other terrorists.

He lied about being a terrorist, & lied continuously over the years. So why would you automatically believe his story about being tortured at Gitmo?

I don't. The British government however thought it had enough truth to give the guy ****tons of money.

Can I move this thread to the Europe sub? Not enough gay wedding cakes here to drum up interest.
