New Yorkers rally to say 'Today I am a Muslim, too'

There is a sad irony in how Muslims are the largest victims of terrorism yet also receive as a whole, the most hatred for it.

Fortunately there are still those who have common decency and humanity and refuse to engage in anti muslim narrative with an underlying suggestion that there is something wrong with being a muslim in America.

I'm not sure when it became "all Muslims are BAD!" but that sure seems to be a prevailing meme coming from the Trump camp (and his supporters). Now Muslim women in American can't have free flowing hair, apparently.

The comments that come from people who have absolutely no idea what they're talking about confound me. The OP is a classic example of that. He knows nothing about Muslims in America but he spouts off, making himself look foolish. But it's read meat for the other Trump supporters. It's always about the read meat.

I won't believe that all Muslims are bad just like I didn't believe that all Catholic priests were bad because some of them were.

How often do women in Muslim nations get a chance to let their hair down and let it blow in the breeze while driving a convertible unaccompanied by their male husband? Besides Indonesia, such lifestyles are simply impossible. These women who say "they are muslim too" should try moving to a Muslim dominated nation for a year and see what the actual Muslim religion is like. Not the Muslims in this nation whose radicalism is tempered by WESTERN CIVILIZATION, Muslims in Muslim dominated countries.

All very true. But Muslim women in, say, the UK can also have a bad time. All too often their husbands do not allow them to learn English in order to keep them isolated within their own 'community'. In any domestic dispute they will be taken before a Sharia court - to Britain's shame there are over 50 in the UK - where the entirely male judges will always take the side of a man.

From some of the supporters, yes. Not all. It is very apparent that some are more comfortable engaging in anti-Muslim rhetoric of late. The level of hatred and painting with a wide brush at times is chilling to sit back and watch.

I lived in a muslim country for 15 months, I don't see what that has to do with the rights of muslims in the US. I think all of the abrahamic religions are total nonsense, but reasonable Americans will stand behind your rights regardless of their own beliefs. Standing up for the rights of muslims is not condoning every view every muslim on earth has. If I stood up for christians against attack I wouldn't be condoning their belief that gays should have their brains beaten in with rocks.

Of course, because she can't do that in most Muslim nations.

Which of course has nothing to do with OP. The OP relates to showing support for Muslims in the US.

to let Muslims know their fellow Americans stood by them.

I wish they would realize it's exactly that kind of inflammatory statements that has lost them the trust of many people. As soon as I read that, I ignore the rest, already doubting it's going to be unbiased. I wasn't a Trump fan to begin with but I find myself being pushed that way the more I hear and read this kind of thing. I'm sure I'm not the only one. So if their intention is to turn people against Trump, it's having the opposite result.

unfortunately this is how the other side also feels about the hate for Muslims

I am against Sharia, I believe the burqua should be banned

but

when I hear the hate preached against a group of people (Muslims) whom ignorant fools have lumped together and labelled, well, I err on the side of safety for all and that means being moderate

I am not Muslim nor Christian but as a human being I think we need to watch ourselves

No, and they won't be going down to the local Mosque to convert to Islam because that's not what the rally is about. The rally is about standing up for what's perceived (true or not) to be a persecuted religious community. If Christians were under attack you'd have a lot of non-Christians standing with them as well.

You can criticize the religion without attacking and punishing the individuals.
people such as yourself give me hope for the world

As I've said over and over neither I not anyone that I have heard of thinks 'all Muslims are bad'. What is bad is the absolutist philosophy, world view, legal system and politiccal programme that is totalitarian Islam.

And I don't see what these marches have to do with Muslims in the U.S. either.

That's because you haven't even tried to understand it. It's saying we'll stand with muslims against any attacks on them or their rights, as if we were muslims ourselves.

There are no Muslims facing any of these so called attacks. What do Muslims who are not American citizens and in fact not even in this country have to do with Muslims in America? Last time I checked Muslims in this country have all the same rights as non-Muslims.

As a sci-fi fan, I'm reminded of a satirical sci-fi story I once read, about rebellious teens in the future, where the fad is to get a huge spike through the skull (probably analogous to body piercings)

So the current real-life equivalent of this is to scream that you're a Muslim.

Outside of the alt-lefts attempts to lie about the issue, wouldn't all these people become bored, since no one is attacking Muslims, or their rights?

I think it starts as "radical Muslim terrorists" but gets heard by many people as "all Muslims" are bad. Now, the people that do say "all Muslims are bad" are misinformed or just idiots. But there are people that attempt to twist the message into that, solely for political reasons.

Unfortunately, many people on here cannot do that. Their fear and hatred runs that deep.

Sad.
