Trump's pick for national security adviser turns down offer: White House official

President Donald Trump's choice for national security adviser, retired Vice Admiral Robert Harward, has turned down the offer, a senior White House official said on Thursday.

Harward was offered the job after Michael Flynn was fired by Trump on Monday for misleading Vice President Mike Pence over his conversations with Russia's ambassador to the United States.

The White House official said Harward cited family and financial reasons for opting not to take the job. Harward is a senior executive at Lockheed Martin.

Two sources familiar with the decision said Harward turned down the job in part because he wanted to bring in his own team.

That put him at odds with Trump, who had told Flynn's deputy, K.T. McFarland, that she could stay

So, which version is correct? The White House version or the 'sources familiar with the decision'? Somebody's blowing smoke.

Looks like Trump will have to pick someone else. So what?

They also reported, "Asked whether he had requested to bring in his own staff at the National Security Council, Harward said, "I think that's for the president to address."
That'll be the end of that, and we can all speculate 'till we get cross-eyed.

Publicly, he probably didn't want to be that specific. He found a way to gracefully decline.

Privately, there is at least one "colorful" comment from his friend, along with the unnamed sources.

I have no trouble believing either.

For the first time in about a year I can look at something an American has done or said and be proud. I have no idea who this general is, nor care really; he is after all wisely remaining on the swelled teat of the military industrial complex rather than climb aboard Trump's version of "Ship of Fools" That's the first reason I like him.

His staunch comment that isn't a comment and the reasons given show wisdom and something we don't often see any more. Character. He made his decision, implemented, and went on his way without dissin' anyone. If the US had more like him they would have less who like Trump

President Trump is trying to persuade Harward to change his mind. https://www.ft.com/content/e89c64b8-f494-11e6-95ee-f14e55513608

From Hot Air:

Mr Harward is said to have turned Mr Trump down. “Harward is conflicted between the call of duty and the obvious dysfunctionality,” said one person with first hand knowledge of the discussions between Mr Trump and Mr Harward. The second person said Mr Trump had asked Mr Harward to return to the White House for another meeting to try to change his mind…

One of the people familiar with Mr Harward’s decision said he was concerned about whether the top advisers around Mr Trump would allow him to install his own staff on the NSC — particularly after suggestions that KT McFarland, Mr Flynn’s deputy, had been asked to remain. When he was offered the position, Mr Harward had told Mr Trump that he wanted some time to think over the idea.

Report: Harward turns down Trump?s offer to replace Flynn due to staffing conflicts, ?dysfunctionality? in administration « Hot Air

From Politico:

But according to an individual familiar with Harward's thinking, the former Navy SEAL who served on the National Security Council under President George W. Bush turned down the Trump offer because he did not receive sufficient assurances about staffing and autonomy. Specifically, the source said Harward wanted commitments that the National Security Council would be fully in charge of security matters, not Trump's political advisers. And he wanted to be able to select his own staff.

Trump's decision last month to place his top strategist and former Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon on the National Security Council was roundly criticized as a departure from tradition, and previous administrations have tried to keep the NSC as divorced from politics as possible.

It's too bad, too, because Harward would have been a good and honorable pick. I guess that's why he turned it down. He's too good and honorable to be a part of this administration.

Trump made a big mistake. As someone said on the news this morning, you don't ask the question unless you know what the answer is. Trump is way too arrogant and clueless to understand that.

How do you know Admiral Harward to know that he is good or honorable?

This is a very weird question. But I guess if you don't actually follow the news and do a little research on people being discussed in the news, you wouldn't know the answer to your own question.

I didn't think this was a hard question. Is it fair to say that the only basis for you saying that Admiral Harward is good an admirable is because he turned down the position?

Before most of these people have been chosen, particularly those in the military, I've never heard of them. Perhaps you have, so I asked.

No, because someone who isn't trying to make this something it isn't would actually take the time to look at the posts I made about Harward before he turned down the job when it was announced that he was the man Trump wanted. You know, the ones where I said he was a great pick because he was a good and honorable man. After I researched him and his history. But why do that, right?

Lot's a priests were called "good and honorable men" before it turned out that they were peadophiles. So the question is: how do you know he's a good and honorable man? Because it looks like you're only saying that because he turned down the job.

WHy would any intelligent and rational person join the cluster **** that is this administration?

I'd turn him down too. No way would any sane person want to be part of that clown show.

I don't really know much about the guy but he didn't seem to be bringing baggage and all he wanted to do was build a team around him to do the job the way he saw fit... and trump was denying him that for whatever reason.

This was your first post on the thread. I read posts on a thread by thread basis; this is the first thread I saw on Admiral Harward, it isn't like I subscribe to your blog. As long as your are going to be prickly, you win the award for run-on sentence of the day.

Morning Rob...I think for whatever reason it is about Bannon being on the NSC....I am also beginning to think that Bannon's days could be numbered if he keeps causing disruptions like this...

Harward purportedly didn't care for the cuisine being served from the White House.

It's real simple in my mind....Vice Admiral Harward wanted to have "his own team" which I think meant get Bannon out of the NSC, and President Trump refused....Harward decided that he couldn't serve the President properly the way he saw fit, and it really is a simple as that...Now for some reason, the President wants to keep Bannon involved in the NSC, when Bannon doesn't really have the requisite creds to be there....Still there are lots of good picks out there, but the President needs to move swiftly.
