Is racism why Adele beat Beyoncé at the Grammys? - CNN.com

But with its racial themes and imagery, some are questioning if the project was "just too black" for Grammy voters.

Kevin Powell, author of the memoir "The Education of Kevin Powell" and a forthcoming biography on rapper Tupac Shakur, thinks so.
He told CNN "Beyonce's 'Lemonade' made a lot of people uncomfortable, because it is so political, so spiritual, so unapologetically black, and so brutally honest about love, self-love, trust, betrayal."

"We are still a nation that does not want to deal so directly with truth," said Powell, who has written about music and race for various publications, including Vibe magazine. "Adele's album is strong, but it is just songs about love. It is safe and uncontroversial; it breaks no new ground. And neither do Grammy voters, generally speaking, when it comes to picking winners of this particular award."

LOL, this is why crying racism has become the equivalent of crying wolf.

Never mind Adele's talent, the fact that she sold a helluva lot more albums last year, and the fact that her album got played a helluva lot more than Beyoncé's. Never mind that Beyoncé has 22 Grammys already.

CNN's favorite game.

1) It's CNN so it's best not to even bother...

2) Is this about the whole Album or just the song? Because Beyonce's "Lemonade" is just a spoken word piece and I never heard that on the radio. Adele's "Hello" was everywhere and I couldn't escape it.

Of course not, because Beyoncé is foreign, no real American has an accent in their name.

Yo, Erod, I'm really happy for Adele and I'mma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time. One of the best videos of all time!

More like Adele's campaign was more well received. These award shows are decided like political campaigns. The record companies court the voters with special gifts, and favors. Whoever wins gets huge boosts in sales, so companies treat these shows like an advertising campaign. Beyonce, has won so many she probably didn't bring her A game to wooing the voters.

That's fine. I'm not really a fan of either, but is it not possible that two artists could both put out something really good, but one is a bit better and more widely appreciated?

Notice that they didn't even show rock album of the year. Just glossed over it with a casual mention.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that claim from some paranoid idiot named Kevin Powell, not CNN?

Adele's voice blows away Beyonce's by a long way.

I don't understand how anybody could claim racism unless it is against the creator of the two voices.

Maybe Beyonce can win MTVs video awards or something.

What does her dancing in a video have to do with whether she wins for best song or album?

AND...

They went out of their way to make sure Beyonce not only got televised winning an award (Urban Contemporary???? WTF is that?), but also gave her about three times as much time during her acceptance speech as anyone else got.

She also got something like 10 minutes to perform her huge production number.

No tears for Beyonce here. None.

Sorry, I was doing a Kenye West impression :)

Adele's album SOLD a lot more.

More people have actually HEARD Adele's music than Beyonce's music from the nominated albums.

Beyonce's music is urban and fits in a niche. I've never heard even one Beyonce' song, because I listen to regular radio stations (not urban or hip hop or whatever). I HAVE heard an Adele song or two.

So I think that's the answer.

Michael Jackson didn't win the big grammy until he did an album to appeal to the masses, which includes middle America. ("Thriller")

Yep, she could have read War and Peace out loud, and they'd have let her. Everybody else got hooked off stage in a nanosecond.

I've emjoyed listening to urban music since Lakeside and Parliament back in the 80s. Don't like rap at all, but still enjoy soulful music.

Honestly, I just don't think she's that great. If she wasn't so hot and didn't have Jay Z force-feeding her music, there's there a ton of better singers in that genre than her.

OMG I loved Parliament! Tear The Roof off is one of my favorite albums.

Beyoncé is overrated. She isn't that good.

No it wasn't racism

Adele is the better singer of the two. No color involved.

That is for sure.

Beyonce cannot stand on the stage without moving and sing her song. She has to be dancing and have background people as well.

Adele is a much stronger voice.
