Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacuated [W:89]

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

Thanks, hon, but we're about 1400 ft above the valley. We'll be fine, I'm sure, but those roads in the valley are packed at a standstill, and all routes east up toward us are blocked/closed. They have to either go west or south, and just try to outrun the thing at 3 miles per hour. That's what really has me scared, if it breaks in the dark with every road for 50 miles packed with stalled vehicles. It's honestly horrible to watch.

It might be a good idea to pack a go-bag. If you can't get out if the damn breaks you might have to be evaced out by helicopter. Keep your head on a swivel and your ass out of the water.

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

You and me both. My area is the closest high ground for tens, if not hundreds, of thousands, and they can't even reach it! Breaks my heart.

I gather this is impacting some close friends and possible family? Be safe Di. I am sending all the positive chi I can...

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

At 8:45 p.m. the lake level fell below the lip of the auxiliary spillway for the first time since Saturday and “the flowing has stopped,”said Department of Water Resources spokesman Doug Carlson.

Threat of Oroville spillway collapse lessens as thousands evacuate from Marysville, Yuba, Butte and Sutter counties | The Sacramento Bee

Just hours after they PANICKED and ordered the evacuation of 160,000, likely panicking most of them, plus many many others who are in their lives or get hot when we watch government fail.

Apparently the timing comes as a shock to these folks, which can only mean that they are not minding the flow rate into the lake.

Or maybe they forgot how to do math.

GOVERNMENT FAIL!

Watching the live feed now. DiAnna, hope the spillway doesn't collapse.

OMG, so do I tens, hundreds of thousands. I'm safe, but they aren't. Heartbreaking.

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

Thank you both. It's the people in the valley who are in dire danger. Unless, of course, the dam breaks, in which case everyone from Oroville to Sacramento can bend over and kiss their ass good-bye.

If things go south and there is a need for assistance, post the links/numbers to call to send whatever people feel they can. Let's hope the worst is some roads and stuff get wet.

Thank you, but we are not in immediate danger. The tens, hundreds of thousands who are unable to get to us, the high ground to the east, are the ones who need your prayers. If they could get to my house, or the house of any of my neighbors, we would keep them safe... unless the dam actually breaks... but they are on the flatlands, trying to outrun a disaster either to the west or to the south.

I do as well, so many thousands upon thousands of people in the valley... and they can't get to the higher ground where we are. I'm beside myself.

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

Shortly after the dam opened, I water skied on Lake Orrovile while on a visit to my cousins in nearby Paradise. They have all since moved from there. I hope all are safe.

This is frightening. That is the largest earthen dam in the world.

I do too. Oroville is ground zero for this potential disaster. I will keep your family in my thoughts.

Thanks, but if the actual dam breaks there will be so many hundred thousands victims, that a couple of sick old people and their cats will not even be on the radar. Our neighbors have three children from 10 to 15 that must be saved first. I honestly don't believe that will happen, but if it does we and my home will probably be gone.

It happens.

Thank you. You are kind, and it is appreciated.

I don't have that yet. Things are dark, black, and in flux. Those in the valley are the ones in the most imminent danger. I and my neighbors will be fine unless the dam itself is destroyed.

I am making way too good of points to be a troll.

Being upset at this level of government incompetence is not only my right, but my obligation, as is registering my objection.

Please, you're not funny. Just STFU. People are in danger of dying here, and you're trying to make a freaking partisan point. Totally inappropriate, unacceptable, and beyond the pale of Upstairs civility, in my opinion. People I know are in danger; people I love are in danger. Your comments are truly despicable, and I can only hope that you will be told so, in order that your utterly outrageous enjoyment of the potential destruction of tens of thousands of lives simply because they are "California lives"invigorates and excites you.

You should probably leave, if you can just to be on the safe side. Go get a hotel room somewhere, or use one of the shelters, if at all possible.

I just tuned in to this. I really hope you and your neighbors are alright.

And if it had broken and flooded out 160K people you'd be here registering your objection too.

The decision to order evacuations is not taken lightly, you clearly have zero knowledge of emergency management procedure, if there's a likliehood of a catastrophic event you order evacuation, it's always better then ignoring the event and dealing with the aftermath

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

I know the area pretty well, used to live in Yuba City. Marysville is a literal bowl inside of levees, one of those levees fail and there is nowhere to go.

If you are down the Feather River, head up to Grass Valley and other points of higher ground. From what I have been reading, longer you wait, worse its going to get, gas pumps are off, as just one obstacle.

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

I'll have a bird's eye view of the carnage, which is frankly really damned frightening right now!

Hopefully nothing comes of it!

They did not understand the situation so they panicked, and encouraged well over 100,000 people to panic.

Really not sure what they were supposed to do at that point. If they felt the threat was imminent, you need to get people out of there. Will it cause a panic and lead to gridlock? Probably. But what's the other choice?

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

Is this attitude really necessary right now?

it is reality in America; how many times do I hear the folks on the right criticize everything California, no matter what it is?

a little sarcasm shouldn't hurt 'adults' ......

Certainly cannot let people stay in the flood plain below a bazillion gallon lake which is overflowing and about to breach its barriers.

Re: BREAKING: Fearing collapse of emergency spillway at Oroville Dam, Oroville evacua

Actually, I am in this area. If the spillway goes, I'll be able to see the resulting county-wide lake from my house. If the dam goes, we won't have a house, although we're at about 1300-1500 ft elevation in the foothills. At the very least we'd have lakefront property.

Just about every river in NoCal eventually feeds into the Feather River, which feeds into the Sacramento River, which is so prone to flooding that it has several huge weirs, spillways, and levees, all prone to overflow and breech. This is the worst I've seen in the 25 years I've lived here. I'll have a bird's eye view of the carnage, which is frankly really damned frightening right now!

Glad you are safe, Di. Reports say the water has started to slow. I hope the worst is over.

Hawk, you're exploiting a tragedy to spread your partisan nonsense. At least wait until people's lives are no longer in danger before you start blubbering about who is at fault. Regardless if you're points are valid, IT'S NOT THE TIME.
