The German Defense Minister has said that the US call for NATO partners to increase their share of the expenditure burden is a "fair demand"

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said she had a positive meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and saw the U.S. call for NATO partners to increase their funding for the transatlantic alliance as "a fair demand."

Von der Leyen, speaking to reporters after the meeting, said she welcomed an offer by Mattis to deepen the strategic dialogue between the two countries, and said he expressed a clear and deep commitment to NATO.

Ohhhh - so before it was all about "destroying NATO", "betraying allies", "handing Europe over to Moscow on a silver platter", blahblahblah - now in hindsight, some are admitting that load-sharing is a fair demand. Fairer burden-sharing is something that will strengthen the alliance, not weaken it.

As Trump has shown us - when it comes to a fairer deal, it doesn't hurt to at least ask. Now that all the initial squawking has died down, it's being seen as a reasonable demand.

Will the Germans realize that they can't afford to fleece the American public into paying for their national security and support millions of refugees at the same time? And once they realize this will they choose to withdraw from NATO in order to continue to import millions of refugees?

This is the positive side of Trump's negotiating methods. He might get free riders in Europe to start spending and he has also moved Germans to discuss their export driven economic model. This is something Obama didn't get anything done on as had earlier Presidents failed to do. The allies haven't actually done much yet, but at least they are now acknowledging it before their own voters. Let's see how it develops.

As most things, this is not so simple. But you seem to have seen the input on the downside, so I won't mention it.

No. I doubt they will withdraw, at least not now. Within the EU they are discussing a parallel organization under the Eu. But that cannot become a believable force very quickly. But let's watch this thing develop.

I think you will see more spending, more troops in the Baltics/Poland.
Our PM goes down next week to meet Trump, our procurement for the Military is a mess as well as funding. I am sure we will see Canada increase defense spending.

The EU is always looking for an excuse to create another bureaucracy - citing Trump is just another excuse.

Neither do they have the money to duplicate NATO, nor do they have the political union to exercise coherent authority over it.
