Was Buffalo mom jailed over homeschooling decision? - Story

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) -Single mother Kiarre Harris started researching homeschooling last November. She says her two elementary school aged children weren't excelling at their failing Buffalo Public Schools.

"I felt that the district was failing my children and that's when I made the decision to homeschool," she said.

Harris says she filed documents at Buffalo City Hall, following all the steps, informing the district of her intent to homeschool her children. According to documents she provided to 7 Eyewitness News, they're dated December 7th and the district says it received her paperwork.

"I spoke directly to the homeschool coordinator and she told me from this point on my children were officially un-enrolled from school."
This, if the mom isn't lying, is FUBAR.

Is there a reason why you didn't use the latest article from the same source? Anyway, a day later:

"The Buffalo Public School District says it cannot comment on this case due to Federal Laws but says in order for a parent to file for homeschooling, they must have full custody of the children. The District also says that in general, a letter of intent is submitted and it is acknowledged along with the requirements for submitting the individual education plans. The District says the children are not to be taken out of school until such time those plans are approved."

*bolding mine

So it seems Mom may have sent a letter of intent or request to withdraw, but my not have been approved. If not, yeah she may be in legit trouble, and it might effect her custody issues including those with the kids' father. I wouldn't doubt it's possible the father may be driving the issue, as well.

Every person who I have ever met who home schools or was home schooled are freaks. I'm just sayin.

Wtf?
You would think that there would be letters sent informing her of court dates and such before any actual ruling, yet there is no mention of such.

While I'll grant that not sending kids to school is a serious issue this sounds like an administrative concern and not one, assuming she was actually schooling the children, that warranted putting the kids in foster care and her in jail.

Yes, I agree that seems like a drastic response.

But we have yet to see the full extant of the board & the women's previous interaction, so I have to stay relatively neutral on this - except for stating she should have lawfully kept the kids in school until allowed otherwise.

So its okay to do this to people your prejudices allow you to dismiss?

I'm just saying that I have never met a person who home schools their kids or was home schooled that isn't a complete weirdo. I'm sure there are people out there who aren't....but every one I have ever met is a complete right-wing religious wacko.....a government conspiracist.....or hippie nut who doesn't want to put the chains of society on their child.

When schools are crap, like most in our inner cities, what choice do parents who value education really have? Not like they get vouchers they can use to switch to a private school... ;)

Better than thirty percent of Chicago Public School teachers send their kids to private schools. They are most fortunate to be able to afford it.

I have met people who homeschooled who weren't "weirdos" at all. Many because of how I've earned my living. Engineers, professors, physicians and nurses, veterinarians (and I'm including the moms)...pick a field. Their reasons for homeschooling are as various as they are. Some are pagans, and some are secularists. Take a look at the home-schooling curricula sometime--there is one that fits you and your family.

One lingering notion is that homeschoolers are somehow "sheltered" from the "real world." In my community, homeschooled kids participate in city sports leagues, 4-H and FFA, and so on. Most of them go on to college, sometimes as early as 12 (most frequently in my observation because of music or math ability).

I'd say that if you have a happy, self-assured 16-year old who has a part-time vet tech job while taking college classes, you're probably doing something right. ;)

It's obvious you never met any of these people that were home schooled:

Theodore Roosevelt, President
Franklin Roosevelt, President
Woodrow Wilson, President
Ansel Adams, world renowned photographer
Robert Frost, poet
Virginia Wolf, novelist
Thomas Edison, inventor
Francis Collins, physician, geneticist
Serena & Venice Williams, professional tennis players
Condoleezza Rice, U.S. Secretary of State

Do you need me to list more weirdos and wackos??

Coming from the lopsided perspective that emanates from your side, that is perhaps just another reason to enroll as well as a badge of honor to those home schooled folks, yanno?

It still would be if she is lying. If the reporting is intentionally misleads it would be too. I can’t help noticing that the headline suggests she was “jailed” for home-schooling when the body only says she was arrested for obstruction. I certainly think the accusation that someone in a position of authority decided to take direct action against her simply because she chose to home school has been quite deliberately written between the lines and on the basis of the limited evidence actually available, is indefensible (which will be why they’d hide it between the lines).

Clearly the outcome is bad and somebody (quite possible several different people) must have done things wrong for it to reach that point. It’s impossible for us to judge who that might be and whether those things were intentional, negligent or honest mistakes. I’m not willing to presume guilt on the part of anyone involved and I don’t think much of anyone else who does.

It didn't show or I missed it. Also it didn't add much to the story. The System claims she didn't have permission, she says she did. Doesn't justify the actions taken either way
