RIP Richard Hatch, Star Of Battlestar Galactica, Dies At 71

RIP, Richard Hatch - briefly met him once at an offside at a Comicon - very warm and fan-friendly guy

I was only 8 years old when BSG came on TV, and he played the unforgettable Captain Apollo

Here's a documentary retrospective on BSG:

Hatch was also Tom Zarek in the 2004 Battlestar Galactica.

Yes indeed - he was cool in that role as well. It was intriguing how friendly-looking he was even as former terrorist Tom Zarek, making him look authentically two-faced.

To each their own.

I think it was one of the best Sci Fi series ever made.

TOS BSG was amazing, imaginative, amazing. BSG Remake was "Man destroyed by his own creation" cliche silliness, and Starbuck chases skirts, he didn't wear them.

I think the re-make had its pluses and minuses.

Certain scenes and ideas were amazing - Adana maneuver, Ellen Tigh's death, and some of the space battles were amazing - hats off to them. The hard sci-fi was an interesting take on things.
But other things, like the constant non-stop musical-beds sexual titillation became off-putting after awhile. Watching Tricia Helfer at a fan-con talking non-stop about what's between her legs made me roll my eyes. Go audition for the Vagina Monologues, honey.

The ending story arc became ridiculous - a bunch of friends reincarnated in a stupid arbitrary way. Really? They screwed up Ellen Tigh's very poignant death by bringing her back to life. Come on. The very final ending notion of them stumbling upon a planet that was better than the one they were searching for was cool, though.

Plus the ending of nu-Galactica was one of the stupidest things ever put on television. Add to that the fact that nu-Galactica had no redeeming characters whatsoever, I genuinely wanted every single human character to die a horrible, painful death, followed closely by the Cylons who took on some of the worst characteristics of humanity, they all should have flown into the sun with their ships.

That said, I recently watched the original Galactica movie and it's still every bit as good today as it was in the 70s.

The sheer level of non-stop sex in the reboot made me wonder why the Cylons didn't just introduce STDs to kill off humanity.

Seeing old clips like this really takes me back to my childhood> though.

I was a part of the online BSG Revival stuff, raised money, wrote the studios, all that stuff. When the show runner (btw he's the same idiot that wrote Kirk's stupid death in Generations) Ron Moore insulted the TOS fans, and show... I was really ticked. When they took the series in that retarded direction, **** on the beloved characters like Starbuck and Boomer... Boomer? A Cylcon? **** you Ron Moore

Right from the start, I could sense the whole 9-11 vibe on Rodney Moore's story. I didn't like the idea of a childhood favorite being tampered within this way. Then when he did a 180 and dived into the New Caprica arc, immediately started complaining about his ridiculous story detour stuntsmanship which was all about Political Correctness. The ratings for the show immediately tanked, because so many fans like me were unhappy at being taken for a ride. That ratings dive got Rodney's attention really quick.

The original show had its flaws, including campy moments, but at least it avoided extreme political messaging.

Ron Moore is crap. I can't say I've liked a single show he's ever been involved with.

Back to Richard Hatch though. I knew him, I had hung out with him at conventions many times, back before he got onto nu-Galactica, he was one of those sad old actors that sat alone waiting for someone to come along and ask for an autograph, just like Lou Ferrigno. So I used to make some time to hang out and talk to him and we knew each other by name and he was a really great guy and the only real evangelist for bringing Galactica back. It would have been better than that nu-Galactica crap. In fact, it used to be him and Herbert Jefferson Jr. usually sitting together. Of course after he got into the show, he stopped doing that and became less accessible. Still, really great guy, even though I haven't talked to him in years.

I have the original pilot on Laser Disc :p That's great stuff, wish I could have gone to a convention, the timing was always wrong when the chance was on hand.

I used to live at conventions far more than I do now. I used to hit 10-15 a year when I was younger. Now I only hit one, Wondercon, coming up at the end of next month. Since I get in for free as a pro, I make sure to hit it every year. My kids grew up as con geeks. :)
