Betsy DeVos confirmed Education secretary; Pence casts deciding vote

I keep seeing remark after remark about her qualifications. Our public school system is pretty messed up in a variety of ways. It was messed up during the tenure of some supposedly very qualified people.

Maybe its not the qualifications but the ideas about what the Department of Education should be doing.

Maybe you need both.

Mega donor to the Republicans rewarded with position she's not qualified for. Surprise surprise surprise. Really bucking the system.

Trump's drainin' the swamp! Abd filling it back up with more swamp water!

From USA Today:

WASHINGTON — The Senate confirmed Betsy DeVos as the nation's 11th Education secretary Tuesday in a historic vote, ending a tumultuous battle over her nomination.White House press secretary Sean Spicer expressed a vote of confidence from President Trump in his newest Cabinet secretary despite opponents saying she is unfit and unqualified to serve.

...With only two Republican members of the Senate — Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska — refusing to support DeVos' nomination, it left Democrats with a 50-50 tie to block her. Vice President Pence, in his role as Senate president, cast the tiebreaking vote in her favor. Betsy DeVos confirmed Education secretary; Pence casts deciding vote

Glad this is over with, and I hope that DeVos will do some good.

How does someone with no experience in education make it better?

Food for thought

Ugg. Criticize the pick. Criticize the contributions. Criticize the votes. But please do so honestly. Yes, amazingly enough, that quote looks amazingly sinister when you strip a whole batch of words away to make it appear as such as your link did. Here's the actual full quote however. What was left out by your dishonest source is underlined.:

“I have decided to stop taking offense,” she wrote, “at the suggestion that we are buying influence. Now I simply concede the point. They are right. We do expect something in return. We expect to foster a conservative governing philosophy consisting of limited government and respect for traditional American virtues. We expect a return on our investment.” SOURCE

Yes, they expect a "return" on their "investment". That return she's speaking of, specifically, is having a "conservative governing philosophy" within the government.

The horrors! You mean people who donate to a political party hope that it causes that political parties ideology to be further in government?! Grab the pitchforks and torches, there's a heretic to burn.

The dishonestly clipped quote, and it's placement in the story, implies that there's some kind of expectation for quid pro quo. In reality, its an admission that people who donate to a party hope that it leads to the parties principles being enacted. How horrible and shocking.

School choice most primarily.

That's not an idea... it's a bias against public schools. If she ever devises a workable plan to deliver genuine "school choice" for all sectors of society and across all income levels, then I'm sure she'll be taken more seriously by her detractors.

Why do you believe in keeping kids in failing schools?

Easy solution here. Get rid of the Dept of Education. Win win for everyone.

How does someone with no experience in education make it better?

By donating a crap ton of money to the Republican party.....oh wait.

Why do you rely on a strawman argument to push your agenda?

your the one against school choice which would go to moving kids that are in failing schools to better ones.
so I am just wanting to know why you want to keep kids in failing schools?

it isn't a strawman at all. if you are against school choice then you are against moving kids out of failing schools and into better ones.

You are incorrect.

Bingo

How many of those GOP Senators accepted campaign $ from her? My oh my, that swamp is getting mighty full.

How many of those Dem Senators accepted campaign money from teachers unions?

So you can't refute the actual argument.

you were ranting against school choice it is clear in black and white.
so you don't even know what you were ranting about.

You're having an argument with an imaginary opponent of your own making.

denial fallacy it is then. thanks for the concession. have a nice day.

As others on this board have witnessed, I'll concede the point when it's deserved.
You haven't experienced that from me because you are seemingly unable to provide a rational counterargument.
Study hard and you may work up to it some day!

Sometimes a new broom sweeps clean, Carleen, and that's what is needed.

And DeVos is not the first Sec/Education who didn't emerge from an education background either.

If DeVos does for the schools nationwide what she did for the schools in Michigan, God help us.

Sometimes a new broom sweeps clean, Carleen, and that's what is needed.
What about when that broom refuses to sweep floors with the brush end and refuses to state it will consider all dirt to be equally in need of being swept?

Would you buy a broom that refused to sweep equally? Because DeVos refuse to state she would treat all schools who received federal funding as being equally accountable.

Buy a vacuum.

Here's a bold prediction.

After 4 years all the lousy schools will still be lousy and all the good schools will still be good. Put another way, it will be indistinguishable from the prior 8 years of liberal control of
the Dept. of Education.
