DETROIT (WJBK) - The leader of a mosque in Dearborn has confirmed to FOX 2 that a man who claimed his mother died in Iraq after being barred from returning to the United States under a ban instituted by President Trump this weekend, lied to FOX 2 about when her death occurred.

Imam Husham Al-Hussainy, leader of the Karbalaa Islamic Educational Center in Dearborn, says Mike Hager's mom did not pass away this weekend after being barred from traveling to the United States. The Imam confirms that Hager's mother died before the ban was put in place.

Just thought I would post this here to make sure to counter balance the lies that were posted yesterday. Thoughts on the disgusting act of lying about your own mother's death to advance a political point? Pretty disgusting to me.

Not disagreeing, but what would your opinion have been if she had died after the ban? That seems more pertinent given the scope of the ban than whether someone scummily lies about their own 'story'.
 
Any chance that CNN, MSNBC, and the New York Times will run retraction stories?

If not, does that mean that they willingly participate in the dissemination of fake news?

That has nothing to do with this now. We know he died about his own mother dying, simply so he could make the President look bad. I don't really have an opinion on the scope of the ban. The courts will decide what is legal. I wish we didn't have to do things like this, but let's not forget, Obama did the same.

Was just going to ask that..... it didnt happen so no point it making it "hypothetical"

But the other question raised by another poster,

and to play with your hypothetical questions.... say the mom did die.... what amazing medical phenomenon would the US have done with less than a 24hour period to save her life that they couldnt have done in Iraq, they dont all live in mud huts and many of them are well educated.....it isnt a tribal only country.....they have medical facilities like many 1st world countries....well how would I know that???? Because yes I was THERE.....

We need corroboration. I'm not saying the Imam is wrong, I'm just saying it's too early to say Joe Blow lied because John Doe says he did.

Interestingly, I only encountered this story after it had been updated with a "this was a lie" (or rather, a sentence to that effect) header and finisher.

I have to wonder why this guy would lie, unless he thought he could make some money off it from people who thought he was harmed by the Travel Ban EO?

True, so I guess, death certificates, cause of death location etc... we need the full story.

But odd, that the Imam the representative of a church versus 1 mans testimony.

More so the Imam stated they gave prayers for them mothers death prior to the Ban and the announcement from the man himself after the fact? Just weird...very very odd...

I will confess that, while I expressed nonjudgmental sympathy first off, I bowed to the criticism I knew would follow if I doubted the story. Later in the thread, I caved and expressed my skepticism.

I would assume the Imam had more concrete evidence than they had prior or else it might look bad if this turns out false too. But I guess in the age of Twitter, the only thing that really matters is getting the information out as fast as you can, whether its true or not.
 
This story is just one that shows how the news media does not validate what they are posting. It also shows they are more interested in the "headline" and showing the govt. in a bad light, than reporting the "truth".
