Rex Tillerson Confirmed as Secretary of State

The U.S. Senate voted Wednesday to confirm ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson as the next secretary of state.

The vote in favor of President Trump's pick for the key cabinet post fell mostly along partisan lines, with Republican lawmakers who have voiced concerns like Senators Marco Rubio, John McCain and Lindsey Graham joining fellow GOP members in affirming the nomination.

Tillerson needed a simple majority — 51 senators — for confirmation. The final vote was 56 in favor, 43 against.

I'm anxious to watch this guy work.

Regardless of politics, this injection of political outsiders into the cabinet is fascinating.

I am interested as well, but a little more skeptical. Trump talks about draining the swamp, but he is surrounding him self with the top 1% and creating a swamp of ethical conflicts of interest.

Or...for a change, maybe we won't have a string of non-practicing attorneys pretending they understand economics, trade, and foreign relations.

Tillerson's ties to the oil industry and Russia undermine his argument that he will serve in the best interests of the country and not himself. You don't work in that field for decades and not leave owing people favors.

I heard that Sessions could be confirmed today, also. I hope so.

While I have issues with the guy, it seemed very likely that he would be confirmed. I have more issues with DeVoss, frankly.

Obviously I do not know why you do, but they are both more than capable of doing the jobs.

Tillerson's ties to the oil industry and Russia undermine his argument that he will serve in the best interests of the country and not himself. You don't work in that field for decades and not leave owing people favors.

Why? Did Condi Rice work for the best interests of Stanford University? Did John Kerry seek to benefit Heinz?

You have it backwards. The problem with today's politicians is that they owe so many people favors for financing their campaigns, nothing gets done. Every bill has a million earmarks and riders attached because they're all indebted.

Tillerson understands the energy sector like nobody before him, but that doesn't mean Exxon will get a bunch of perks.

Condi Rice worked for the best interests of Dick Cheney. And John Kerry didn't own or run Heinz. Tillerson was the CEO of an oil company. That comes with baggage. Sketchy baggage because he's doing business with rogue states like Russia.

he problem with today's politicians is that they owe so many people favors for financing their campaigns, nothing gets done.

Oh, I totally agree which is why I support public campaign financing with a ban on all political donations of any kind. And if you think oil companies didn't contribute to help get Trump elected, then you're kidding yourself.

Tillerson understands the energy sector like nobody before him, but that doesn't mean Exxon will get a bunch of perks.

Well, without significant oversight you can't really make that statement. We've already seen in two nominees using their positions to get themselves perks. Why is there any reason to believe Tillerson would be any different?

That comes with baggage. Sketchy baggage because he's doing business with rogue states like Russia.
All absurd assumption.

Good. I like Tillerson a lot. He's my favorite of all of the Cabinet picks.

All absurd assumption.

I think it's naive to think Tillerson doesn't have inherent bias because of his decades of work in the oil industry.

Of course you do, you also think he has some imaginary baggage. Emphasis on imaginary.

I think Tillerson might be capable, I'm mainly concerned with his possible conflicts of interest.

As for DeVoss, my impression of her is that she is a nominee almost exclusively because she donated money to the right people. I don't think she is even remotely capable of improving education.

I am interested as well, but a little more skeptical. Trump talks about draining the swamp, but he is surrounding him self with the top 1% and creating a swamp of ethical conflicts of interest.

That's one way to look at it. The other way to look at it is he is surrounding himself with people who know how to identify problems and solve them, with people who aren't in this for the money because they don't need it, and people who have already achieved huge private success and appreciate the opportunity to serve to give something back to their country.

These are people who either have impeccable and unimpeachable track record for ethics or people who are not part of the professional politicians and bureaucrats, i.e. the permanent political class that is in it mostly for personal gain.

What? Reading this you'd think they found DeVoss at the Mar a Lago new year party, serving drinks. That couldn't be further from the truth.

I can't say I find it odd that the biased don't get that.

I saw at least a portion of her confirmation hearings.

I did not get the impression she knew a damned thing about how to educate.

Tillerson's ties to the oil industry and Russia undermine his argument that he will serve in the best interests of the country and not himself. You don't work in that field for decades and not leave owing people favors.

As opposed to career politicians who don't owe anyone favors and would only serve the best interests of the country

Of course you do, you also think he has some imaginary baggage. Emphasis on imaginary.

Well, the baggage isn't imaginary, it's explicit. In that line of work, baggage comes with the territory. After all, you're dealing with rogue regimes, despots, dictators, and oligarchs. Hard to see how that doesn't skew your perspective away from the country's interests to your own.

But whatever, at least he's not Guiliani.

Look, that problem is solved rather easily; public campaign financing with a ban on political donations of any kind.

:applaud

I can't say I find it odd that the biased don't get that.

They can't get it because they have already made up their minds to hate Trump and anybody associated with him. There is zero effort made by most--there ARE exceptions--to be honest, fair, or objective about anything or anybody in the Trump Administration.

Aside from that violating the Constitution rights of the people, its a great idea.

No, it is imaginary.
