Republicans vote to suspend committee rules, advance Mnuchin, Price nominations - CNNPolitics.com

(CNN)Senate Republicans took an extraordinary step Wednesday to move forward with two of President Donald Trump's top Cabinet nominees after confronting a boycott from Democrats across the aisle.
Republican lawmakers on the Senate Finance Committee -- the panel that oversees the nomination of Steve Mnuchin to be Treasury secretary and Rep. Tom Price to be secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services -- gathered for the second day in a row with Democrats on the committee refusing to show up.

This is what you get, Dems, for acting like petulant children for so long.

You insisted on filibustering Bush's Supreme Court nominee, which was highly unusual. You insisted on circumventing Congress by passing massive legislation with Obama's executive orders. You let the likes of Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, and Obama steer you into the abyss.

So what goes around, comes around.

Today, the GOP found ways around process, too. You wouldn't show up, so they changed committee rules to get Mnuchin and Price into their cabinet positions.

If necessary, the same will be done for the Supreme Court nominee, Sessions, and everyone else needed.

I hope the GOP can get a supermajority in two years so a more fool-proof system can be put in place to do these things in a more stately manner.

After the Reps have had a deliberate policy of blocking every single thing Obama tried to bring in regardless of what it was, and wouldn't even consider his suprme court choice, you are damn hypocritical for criticising the Dems for this.

Nice try.

These tactics starting when Barack Obama filibustered the appointment of Justice Alito in 2006. Then, Harry Reid changed the filibuster rules in 2013 so that you only need a majority to pass a supreme court pick.

Obama has admitted he regrets filibustering Alito, which wasn't done against any of the prior justices on the bench.

Thanks to Reid, the rule now is that there are no rules. And with Obama and his executive orders, you now see that Congress is a bystander to most everything.

Obama poisoned the well, on Day 3 of his administration, the dem's told the GOP "We'll hear your concern on the budget and work it out, then submitted a budget done behind closed doors with nary a GOP voice heard.

Forget those little inconvenient facts?

Wow. After only 2 weeks of the minority party playing hardball y'all are already having conniption fits.

Justices Sotomayor (68-31) and Kagan (63-37) may disagree.

Yep. The rats have already stated they will block anything/everything.K...thats cool. I am all about choice. They can choose to take their actions, and the GOP will respond. And thanks to Harry Reid...there is a clear path to completing the nomination and approval process.

The rats tipped their hand before Trump was even inaugurated. They will do everything in their power to claim Trump is not legit. And that includes not being a part of the voting process. What that will GUARANTEE is that in 2 years when 36 or so rat senators come up for reelection a large percentage of them will get their assess handed to them.

This is not unlike dealing with children throwing a temper tantrum. The adult doesnt fight with the child. The adult doesnt engage in the tantrum. So...rats can continue to have their tantrums. You will support their tantrums. The adults wll carry on with without them, depending on the rats choices.

Update to this thread.

They just voted Jeff Sessions through to for a final vote for AG.

If you don't show up, why should anyone even tolerate you.

Dems are acting like petulant brats.

Hillary had better hope the ongoing FBI investigation turns up nothing new. I think he stands pat, but if more comes out....uh oh.

You mean after the republican majority in congress exercised its own prerogatives

The white house and congress are co equal branches you know

I think that story is over. I will be surprised if sessions does anything about her email

what I do think will be this whole charity thing.

if find it interesting that as soon as she doesn't have the presidency both their charity and their global fund project
dries up all income sources.

there is no reason that should occur. major donators pull out or stopped paying all of a sudden.
there is something fishy going on there.

Relax buddy. It's just getting started. You sound like a Democrat complaining about Republicans blocking the ACA. Almost to a T. Hilarious when you think about it.

No, that's not what Reid did. You should know what you're talking about before talking.

I agree in part, but let's not forget that the Dems really sucked at exploiting that GOP overreach and obstructionism. In fact, I'd say they down right failed to make hay out of anything, and they had a huge lead going into 2009. dems remind me of a team that goes up by three touchdowns in the first quarter only to lose the game 48-21 when the final whistle blows.

blah blah blah, the other side does it to. Huzzah when my side does it. that's pretty much all your side has, it's what the Dem side will say when they're in power again too. No high roads left anymore.

Partisan hypocrisy no matter which way you cut it. It's sickening, it's destroying the Republic.

Im relaxed. I think its a crack up watching the rats shoot themselves in the fot. I think its hilarious watching people running around screaming "What are we going to protest today!" Children throwing tantrums..well...you can kinda understand that. Adults throwing tantrums...well that sits funny as hell to me.

You arent doing yourself any favors. And its only going to get worse.

though y'all were aiming to be better than Obama, not just more of the same. Guess not.

1) What is the point of having any rules at all if they can be "suspended" on a whim?

2) This precedent will come back to bite the GOP when the Dems eventually retake Congress.
