WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump acted Saturday to fulfill a key portion of his pledge to "drain the swamp" in Washington, banning administration officials from ever lobbying the U.S. on behalf of a foreign government and imposing a separate five-year ban on other lobbying.

Trump had released the plan for a lobbying ban a few weeks before the November election. It would ban all executive-branch officials from lobbying for five years after leaving their government jobs, and impose a lifetime ban on lobbying for a foreign government — one of several promised policies aimed at curbing the influence of lobbyists.

While the majority of Trump's critics were busy demonizing him today, the President was attempting to make good on his desires to drain the swamp. Personally, I think a this is definitely more than we'd gotten under a Hillary Clinton presidency.

This is the sort of swamp draining that triggered protests.

If Trump keeps this up, he'll be re-elected in a landslide. I'm just glad he's getting his policies put in early, so that they can immediately start working their positive effects on the country. Soon the Obama years will be a distant ugly memory.

It's a good step, but the temporariness of it doesn't really make sense. It also would've been better if he included something about domestic lobbying as well.

I am one of Trump's biggest bashers on this board, but I will give credit where credit is due. This, along with Trump's pulling out of TPP, were very good moves. Thank you, Mr. President.

Yes, I feel like he could have gone further, with domestic lobbying, as well as all the payola that goes on through big paydays for speeches and appearances. This was a good first step however, let's hope there's more.

Assuming it's practical legally speaking, I don't hate this. I might have sort of flipped those things around personally, but ok, sure, it's a start.

I don't think this even begins to mitigate everything I hate about Trump, nor do I see any reason why I should stop opposing him. After all, who needs lobbyists when you make up your own facts anyway? He's just getting rid of redundancies.

But I'm perfectly capable of saying that I'm ok with some individual thing Trump did, if that's what you're implying.

Great.

I think its unconstitutional to ban people from petitioning govt, unless they agreed to it when they took the job. Lobbying isnt really the problem here. The massive power of the govt is.
