RIP John Hurt

At least he made it to 2017. RIP.

Most Americans only know the John Hurt from the mega-budget movies.

There were many other great movies broadcasted over the BBC that are overlooked here.

My wife being from England, turned me onto a lot of his other work.

His performance in ELEPHANT MAN is one of the best things any actor has ever done since the days of D W Griffith. The man went through hell to make that move with five hours of heavy make up in the morning and then another two to three hours to get it all off. And he still managed to make what looked like a monster one of the most sympathetic and outright wonderful humans who ever walked on the planet come to life. I screened it for my grandson recently and it still knocks me over with its greatness and its all due to Hurt and Hopkins.

Also liked him in HEAVENS GATE which lots more people need to see and appreciate.

I thought he played a brilliantly maniacal Emperor Caligula in the BBC miniseries I, Claudius.

He always died in many of his roles though, he was sort of like the prototype Sean Bean.
