Trump calls his inauguration 'National day of patriotic devotion'.

The point of me starting this thread was to discuss whether Trump naming his inauguration a national day of patriotic devotion was a disturbing insight into his mind and the weirdly North Korea-ish vibe of it.

You want to explain this?

Donald Trump has declared that the day of his inauguration should be a “national day of patriotic devotion”.

On Monday, paperwork was filed with the federal government declaring that the day of his inauguration, 20 January 2017, would be officially known as the “National Day of Patriotic Devotion”.

It is not unusual for incoming US presidents to draw on their political and philosophical beliefs when, as is customary, they give a new name to inauguration day. Barack Obama called his first inauguration, in 2009, a National Day of Renewal and Reconciliation; eight years earlier, George W Bush began his first term by declaring the date a National Day of Prayer and Thanksgiving.

Thoughts? This definitely has a North Korean ring to it.

In liberal land it's bad to be patriotic. To be a proper liberal, or just not a totalitarian NK regime, you have to hate your country.

It's amusing how so many cons had complained about Obama having a big ego (which he didn't), yet here we go with Trump and all of a sudden to cons it's ok to have an ego. Another hypocritical example from the cons.

Why? Because he renamed the day just like the two previous Presidents did?

You want to explain this?

Explain what? That calling the day of his inauguration (or indeed calling any day) the national day of patriotic devotion sounds like something straight out of N.Korea? Clearly plenty of people think that as there are memes all over the internet.

So being patriotic is suddenly North Korean? That's just total bull****. Someone loving their country is North Korean? Utter nonsense.

Keep drinking the koolaid all you want. The hero worship you have for Trump is downright crazy. You act as if he is the next messiah.

100% failure. I pointed out truth, and you attack me for it... Pretty sad that that's the best you can do. Maybe next time we'll give you subject to discuss that fits you better - like "Which tastes better - red crayons or blue crayons?"
Trump is creepily pushing a Nationalistic message and agenda. Einstein said it best though
“Nationalism is an infantile thing. It is the measles of mankind.”

Not because he renamed the day, but because of what he called it. Patriotic devotion? Really? It's a phrase regularly used in N.Korea propaganda:

In an address to a military parade in Pyongyang on 10 October 2015 – the party’s 70th anniversary – Kim thanked the “heroic men and women” of the army and security services who, “in hearty response to the party’s appeal, have worked with patriotic devotion and created one heroic miracle after another”

On 19 December last year, the fifth anniversary of the death of Kim’s father, Kim Jong-il, the Rodong Sinmun, the ruling party’s official newspaper, said of the late leader: “The noble image and patriotic devotion of the peerless patriot, who reliably defended socialism centred on the popular masses and turned [North Korea] into an invincible politico-ideological power and a world military power.”

In an article just after Kim’s death, the official KCNA news agency cited meteorologists as saying “the spring of prosperity under socialism will surely come … thanks to the patriotic devotion of Kim Jong-il, who blocked the howling wind of history till the last moments of his life”.

I act like he's the next Messiah because I don't think the concept of patriotism is evil? How quaint.

In worshipping their nationhood men worship themselves and scorn others, and that isn't healthy.

So this is just a NK thing, eh?

Seems like the standard political propaganda.

*shrug* Lots of people have devoted themselves to our country. Many did to the point of death during various wars. I've been to both Afghanistan and Iraq so I've devoted quite a bit of myself to the country.

May we always have those who show devotion to our country to preserve it, because she cannot rely on those who despise her.

So let me get this straight...it is not unusual for incoming US presidents to draw on their political and philosophical beliefs but yet Trump is engaging in behavior reminiscent to what happens in North Korea?

The haters are once again making parodies of themselves.

So what is it you 'worship?' You seem to have a problem with nationalism and 'putting America first.' So who should be first if not America? And to be quite honest, it is liberals who scorn others. All these protests and rallies speak only of the supposed plight of Americans. Wasn't that womans march exactly what you denounce--a group of people worshiping themselves and scorning others? Of course it was. Apparently, hypocrisy isn't something you worry too much about.

Patriotism is, fundamentally, a conviction that a particular country is the best in the world because you were born in it. I've family is Sweden that are big Nationalists. Can't have rational conversations with them either.

Who cares what he calls it, so long as he is not trying to make a Law forcing it upon us. Yes, some see it as him making it something it may or may not mean, but that is the least of our worries these days. Focus on what actually means something to the Nation, these sorts of petty squabbles are not do anything other than to distract from the real issues, or maybe that is the game plan, let's worry about naming a day that occurs every four years and fight over bathroom rights, forget that we are going deeper and deeper into debt and are about to get into trade wars with much of the world.

I don't worship anything besides the songwriting of certain musicians, being a musician myself. Nationalism is what makes some people think they are better than others and just as often inspires delusions of superiority. First it starts with 'birds of a feather flock together' and it gradually becomes more a case of 'my dog is better than your dog' with guns in it.

That's just bull**** but I have no doubt that you believe it. Not sure what sort of fantasy land you lie in, but the primary role of any government is to put the interests of its people first and, thus, above those of all others.

People who believe are sucking air through a bent straw.
