Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net neu

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

Cable companies would normally charge Netflix for the extra bandwidth they used. The regulation wouldn't allow that. It had to be "equal". So instead of those using Netflix paying more for their service, and therefore paying the cable companies that way, the cable companies just charge households money for going over a cap because streaming uses a lot of bandwidth.

This would apply to all the streaming services like Amazon, Hulu, ect.

The regulation won't allow cable companies to force Netflix and other companies that take away from their cable TV monopolies business from paying "usage fees". Imagine if a phone provider could limit the speed in which you could call 911 unless your local 911 office paid them a fee every month for "proper" access. The fact is, the companies want more profits now that Netflix and Amazon are cutting into their profits. Also, the average consumer is using more data each month than before, which means they can't get as much of a massive profit as they could prior when all of their subscribers also had a cable connection. Supporters of destroying this bill are simply in support of monopolies as well as greed controlling the internet. Net neutrality is the first step in the right direction of allowing the internet to be open and free.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

So the last at least partially sane people then.......Do you even know why you are against it? Do you believe monopolies need to be regulated by Govt. because they are not regulated by free market principles? Do yo u know what a monopoly is?
Sure, let's run with this despite that it's contrary to every post I've made so far...

Monopoly is a kickass board game that has really taught me everything I know about economics. Monopolies are good as long as you are in on it.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

Maybe if they effect your ability to connect and download at reasonable speeds on Steam you will think more about your decision.

Maybe, but then again it could be Steam pays for the fast lane so it's smoother and better then it is now.

Your fears are like the people that fear flying but then go out to dinner and have three glasses of wine and drive home.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

as much as the market will bear.

Bull****. This is a FORUM, it doesn't stream, aside the picture threads it's low use. If DP were relegated to the "slow" lane you almost certainly wouldn't even notice it, why? Because streamlining traffic isn't going to be horror you think.

So you have stock in Comcast so we should not regulate them? At least that is a reason. Not a good one, but a reason.

Hey Trump supporters! I like this idea a lot, actually. See Republican. Now stop calling me otherwise...

So what if EA and Comcast make an agreement which means that Origin is non capped, while Steam is capped. You think this is perfectly okay? What if someone wants to use Steam and can only get Comcast in their area?

It's amazing how you view the world as a zero sum game. The markets would even it out, I believe in the markets. You believe in Government dictates to fix things. On this we disagree. The internet is what it is because GOVERNMENT for the most part, kept out of it. You want to handcuff the net, I want to let the markets work. You have what if fears, I have the proven power of the markets to correct bad business moves (let's not talk about VHS mmmkay?).

We agree to disagree.

IF the ISP's act unfairly, we can address that in due course, that's when Government can be an effective tool, but bureaucrats are generally piss poor at running large systems and the law of unintended consequences often rears it's ugly head.

Actually, since you went what if...

What if Comcast does that, and another ISP moves in to scoop up the market Comcast is denying?

Wow, utterly clueless about the Internet and how it came into existence.

They legally can't because you support crony capitalist monopolies that were set up in place to prevent competition and expansion of alternative ISP's.

Ah, so you want government regulation when it finally dawns on you how it might benefit you.

Google is trying that and running into massive roadblocks due to...utility poles. So if your isp starts screwing you and you're waiting for a competitor to help you out, good luck.

Stated objective[edit]
The 1996 Act's stated objective was to open up markets to competition by removing regulatory barriers to entry: The conference report refers to the bill “to provide for a pro-competitive, de-regulatory national policy framework designed to accelerate rapidly private sector deployment of advanced information technologies and services to all Americans by opening all telecommunications markets to competition”.[6] Congress attempted to create a regulatory framework for the transition from primarily monopoly provision to competitive provision of telecommunications services.

Is what I am referring to. Yes I know the internet started as a DARPA Product, thankfully it didn't STAY with the Government.

So what you're saying is we need Government to fix a problem Government created?

It has been. We did not have net neutrality before the FCC passed the net neutrality regulation.

The reason the regulation was passed was because it affected service of all kinds. Broadband providers were squeezing speeds/bandwidth at times, sometimes making the internet so slow that it was very noticeable and frustrating to some customers. That includes just looking at websites. But those that had paid a fee (Netflix paid $50M, I think) were not affected. Obviously small businesses can't pay fees. So only large companies have that option.

The practice adversely affects small businesses, esp startup businesses. Anyone who supports small businesses would support net neutrality.

Broadband providers came up with the scheme to get more $ to compensate for the loss of cable revenue.

But broadband providers don't own the internet. They own the equipment and lines. It's like AT&T deciding which phone numbers it will let call into your house. Those that pay an extra fee, it will let through. The others can't get through, or the lines will have static.

Net neutrality also prevented broadband providers from blocking sites and services. Without it, your broadband provider can block any sites and services it wants. So it can demand fees from them, if they want to get through to your area.

The consumer will no longer have full access to the internet without net neutrality.

You fail to understand I have no problem with the concept of Net Neutrality, I just don't feel the installed NN was even close to being such a thing. I also don't fear the internet being free of regulation, and letting the markets do their thing.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

Many if not most telecommunications have monopolies because of government control These telco's then use their government provided monopolies to rape and pillage the American populace.

Nope. They have monopolies because of the required sunk investment to enter the market is a massive barrier of entry. Just like your local electricity provider is a de facto monopoly... what company is going to front the cost of building an alternative electric distribution channel?

You pay for your bandwidth. That's just how it works.

What is the likelihood of this happening in a reasonable time frame? There are enormous barriers to entry for telecommunications firms. Sure, AT&T, Verizon, etc... are entering these markets, but to pretend this industry is predicated on competition is sheer naivety.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

I'll never understand how people think Government control = "Their Best Interest".

That's the thing. The government has been picking winners and losers in everything it touches--energy, auto makers, health care, etc. etc. etc. Who is so brainless to think that if the government has control of the internet, it won't pick winners and losers instead of the free market doing that?

Facebook, Twitter, Linked in, and so many enormous web services have developed without benefit of internet neutrality. And if somebody tries to monkey with access, there are thousands of nerdy tech guys out there who just live to foil plans like that and figure out ways around it.

And given the very rapid advancement of technology in general, as well as new innovations on how the internet is used, is anybody so brainless as to believe government is quick enough to anticipate and keep up with all that?

If internet access, speeds, etc. becomes a problem THEN intervene. But if it ain't broke, I sure don't want the government trying to fix it.

And what happens when Comcast is the only provider in your area or the two providers are both doing the same thing? This isn't the free market and the internet has become a necessary service for everyone.

Being anti-Net-Neutrality just gives Comcast new power to **** over its customers, it does not open the field for competition.

Re: Trump names new FCC chairman: Ajit Pai, who wants to take a 'weed whacker' to net

And that's when Comcast loses market share.

You are only assuming this occurs. For example, Comcast imposes a 1TB data cap on high speed internet in my area... and given my alternatives are non-existent, I am forced to pony up an additional $35/month for unlimited data. What is interesting is that if you stream Xfinity content, it doesn't count against your data cap.
