Sen. Marco Rubio said Monday that he will vote to confirm Rex Tillerson as secretary of state after previously expressing concerns about the former Exxon Mobil CEO.

"Given the uncertainty that exists both at home and abroad about the direction of our foreign policy, it would be against our national interests to have this confirmation unnecessarily delayed or embroiled in controversy. Therefore, despite my reservations, I will support Mr. Tillerson's nomination in committee and in the full Senate," the Florida Republican said in a statement.
The support from Rubio, a Florida Republican and Senate Foreign Relations committee member, all but removes GOP opposition to Tillerson's nomination in a Senate the party controls. Sens. John McCain, R-Ariz. and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., also said they will vote for Tillerson after criticizing him previously

Good Boy

I called this weeks ago, there was nothing to gain by pissing Trump off, by refusing to let him have the team he wants. The Trump Party owns Washington, and DJT is the leader of the party, hopefully all are clear on that now.

I'm a big fan of Tillerson and hope he gets confirmed.

But if I understand you correctly, Rubio and every other lawmaker is simply supposed to be a sheep and follow Trump, no matter what he wants and no matter what he does. I'll bet you cheered the Democratic lawmakers in DC when they blindly followed Obama and never challenged him, amirite?

No, normal rules of power apply, one follows the leader unless they have a very good reason to not follow. There was never a good reason to not let Trump have his team, all of the words written (there were a lot) to the narrative that Congressional R's might "stand up to Trump" on his cabinet were garden variety journalistic malpractice.

So in other words, don't do your job and hold hearings and ask questions. Simply approve everyone Trump puts in front of them, just because. Play follow the leader.

That worked so well when Obama was President, didn't it?

I was confused by this choice for Secretary of State until Condi Rice came forward and said it was an excellent choice. Good enough for Condi, good enough for me.

Now there's a woman I have mad respect for.

Of course he will. Was there ever any serious question that a Republican would not fall into line?

Unless the filibuster is put back in place yes, that is how it will work going forwards, nobody is going to screw over their own President just as he comes into office. Keep in mind that I am not claiming that this is how the process should work, I am saying that this is how it dos work and is how it will continue to work. D's were warned that the rule changes had huge downsides, this is one, cabinet conformations are mostly a charade now.

Big deal.

Rubio was always going to support him - he just gave him a hard time to make himself look big.

What happened to Trump being an agent of change? It will happen this way because it's always happened this way?

Rex Tillerson shows that Democrats need to stop putting faith in the GOP.To block Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees, Democrats need the help of at least three Republicans. This has led Democrats to place their faith in a handful of hawkish Republicans—most notably John McCain and Lindsey Graham, but also Marco Rubio and Rand Paul—who have voiced concern at Trump’s plan to have cozier relations with Russia.
Democrats began sounding the alarm when Trump nominated Tillerson, the CEO of ExxonMobil who was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship in 2013, to be secretary of state. By late December, it looked as though McCain and Graham, with the help of one other senator, could submarine Tillerson’s nomination.

But it should also be a lesson for Democrats and everyone else to stop putting their faith in the GOP. Whatever resistance there is to Trump will come from outside the Republican Party.

Delusion on the left departs with great resistance.

Damn.

Yes, there was. It's common enough that someone gets the ax when faced by committees, and Republicans were much more willing to critique Tillerson.

I think it wasn't to make himself look big, but to remind Trump he is not emperor.

That cause would be better served by a no vote, even if he was alone.

Shall we call this "Delusions of the Right"...like #NeverTrump?

One must pick their battles, and this isn't one Marco really wants, obviously. "Causes" are the alt-lefts domain...

There is a reason to do a person's job when warranted. In this case because you think Tillerson should not be confirmed you automatically think they are not doing their job. I suggest they are doing their job in spite of your objections.

If the premise was for Rubio to remind Trump that the legislative body is a check on Trump's authority and that Russia shouldn't have a friendly administration, a no vote would have made more sense.

Not really. It's very common for an incoming administration to need to send 2 picks for confirmation rather than just 1.

Obviously the bolded part was your addition, and as I already stated, this is not a battle Marco wants. The message was sent and received without a no vote.
