U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he plans talks soon with the leaders of Canada and Mexico to begin renegotiating the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"We will be starting negotiations having to do with NAFTA," Trump said at a swearing-in ceremony for his top White House advisers. "We are going to start renegotiating on NAFTA, on immigration and on security at the border."

NAFTA was a colossal mistake in my opinion. It didn't do any of things it was supposed to, like improving Mexico's job market enough to prevent illegal immigrants from seeking passage into the USA. Instead, Mexico has received low paying jobs that had previously sustained American families, while the USA has received unskilled laborers, and massive amounts of illegal drugs like Meth and heroin.

Perhaps not quite as stark as that, but yeah, pretty close.

Are there any positive effects of NAFTA, besides some shareholders seeing their stocks increase?

From what I understand, the products that are manufactured or assembled in Mexico are less expensive. The same for China's (although not in NAFTA). I have to believe that Canadian labor rates are roughly the same as US labor rates.

Of course, if you have no good paying manufacturing job, you really aren't in a position to go on a buying spree.
