Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody [W:273]

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

Wait, let's say for one second the currently reported information is true and this guy is military.

Are you going to talk about gun control for members of the armed forces?

No guns at the airport. Checked or unchecked. TSA is brain dead.

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

The shooter was a military guy?

Christ. Anyone else notice how quite a few of these mass shootings are caused by military people?

probable mental illness.

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

Don't think I didn't notice that you evaded my question.

Do you understand why it's important to wait at least an hour before going into the pool after eating yet?

Whatever.

Do we know if he got past the TSA? To my knowledge, I know of very few airports where you're checked upon entry of the building.

You don't get to the TSA until after a bit of walking in most airports.

A friend of mine is flying out of DFW today. I've been there a few times, I didn't see a TSA agent until well after I'd walked well past a few restaurants and bathrooms that are busy and populated as ****.

No....

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

After he emptied his clip, the shooter threw his gun down and laid down, spreadeagled, on the tarmac, waiting for the police to arrest him.

Sounds like he has serious mental issues.

DFW's design worries me from a security standpoint. It has an unusually low gates-to-security-checkpoints ratio, and the gates are an unusually short distance away from the non-sterile area.

 How da hell did he get out on the tarmac in the first place? Run out one of the emergency exits?

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

12:50 PST: all clear. There were no others involved. Shooter's ID confirmed as Esteban.

No info on a uniform or military status. A person was injuered later while escaping which caused a kerfuffle in another terminal.

8 wounded, 5 dead. Shooter used a rifle.

Omar Mateen ? Wasn't he ex-military ? A good ole boy American patriot ??

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

You must be really close to the investigation to know this wasnt a terrorist attack

let me guess, you are one that spreads this kind of crap, right?

I think he was in baggage claim when he started shooting.

Wouldnt be your first guess.

Your'e the one who, without a doubt knows what his motive was

So your'e really close to the investigation then ??

Oh Christ. The body could could have easily been in the hundreds, if that's the case.

But non-military civilians do it too! You're being Militarophobic by these comments.

Unless he had a specific set of targets in mind like a former boss or co workers

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

Unrelated but on design, my favorite so far was the Jetblue terminal at Logan, the Legal Seafood there has a 5 star view of the TSA checkpoint. (downside or upside depending on how you look at it, the gates are pretty far away).

Anyways, CNN is providing top notch information so far, about 5 minutes ago they explained the shocking fact that planes are diverted when a airport is under threat. Oh and airports are now catching up and diverting flights going to FLL (first time I've heard airports decide flight plans!).

Im not claiming anything. As of now there is no proof that this is terrorism. Do you have any proof?
im not the one claiming there is or isnt.

Im just calling BS on a fake conservative news site.

He was wearing a Star Wars t-shirt. That's a dead give-away.

Re: Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: Multiple people killed, suspect in custody

Not really, Mags. It's about access control. There is little to no access control to airport ticketing and baggage claim and that has/is largely due to freedom of movement. Where should airports begin to screen people? At the curb? I suppose that is possible but imagine the logistics. At any place you have control points you have crowds of people waiting to gain admittance. Wherever crowds of people gather you have a potential soft target area. The more you harden a public area the less free access will be available and the more time it will take people to enter.

I've long said that the baggage claim areas of airports were highly vulnerable. Access is difficult to control and by nature baggage claim in most airports is organized chaos.

I hate to say it but we can look for similar things to happen outside sports stadiums before the gates, where access is free, but, once again, where people gather in large and larger numbers as they approach security access points to enter the stadium or arena. Where then do you place control points? Car bombs in parking areas outside a stadium must surely keep many police from sleeping at night.
