West Virginia official who called Michelle Obama 'ape in heels' fired

The director of a West Virginia nonprofit agency who called first lady Michelle Obama "an ape in heels" in a Facebook post has been fired and the institution put under outside management, state officials said on Tuesday.

Pamela Taylor, director of the Clay County Development Corp (CCDC), which provides services to poor and elderly residents, drew international condemnation after her comment last month about Obama went viral.

She resigned in November but was reinstated last month, prompting West Virginia to review its contracts with the nonprofit.

Democratic Governor Earl Ray Tomblin's office said the state had secured an agreement under which the Appalachian Area Agency on Aging will manage the CCDC for six months.

Your link simply says that she is no longer "director" - that does not mean that she is no longer on the payroll. The link also implies that some other layer (of BS overhead?) management has been added. This is typical of government "fixes" - blame "the system" (and add more to it) rather than ever fire folks or cut funding.

I don't know what laws were passed in WV to address this, but it is constitutional for them to do so:

"3-7. Freedom of speech and press guaranteed.

No law abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, shall be passed; but the Legislature may, by suitable penalties, restrain the publication or sale of obscene books, papers, or pictures, and provide for the punishment of libel, and defamation of character, and for the recovery, in civil actions, by the aggrieved party, of suitable damages for such libel, or defamation."

Wasn't she just recently reinstated?

I don't think it was government. I think it was a private nonprofit company that was contracted by government to do a job.

I think it went... She resigned. Then got reinstated. Then got canned.

OK. Circuitous course to the end result.

It doesn't change the fundamentals of the case, in that such a comment is uncalled for.

apdst will not be happy to learn that his America isn't totally back.

That's my take, they (state government) just rearranged things on paper so they can give themselves plausible deniability.

If you meant "UNconstitutional" that's not correct. She can get fired for her speech, no question about it.

As I replied in a previous thread on this topic, why did the W.VA. worker describe Michelle as an 'ape in high heels' if the comment were purely racist? Because her comment wasn't intended to be racist. It was a comment about Michelle's musculature. Come on, lighten up you free speech haters.

No, I meant constitutional since the what she did is addressed in the WV constitution.
