Wham! star George Michael has died

There's no official or unofficial cause of death given yet. I've been reading and listening to BBC reports and pneumonia or HIV have not been mentioned as causes of Michael's demise. Why not wait before speculating? He has had pneumonia previously and did lose a partner to AIDS, so I guess that's where this gossip is coming from.

its unknown but when someone dies of "pneumonia" at 53 and has had a history of having sex with multiple partners including someone who did die of AIDS, the probabilities are rather high

Nope, his sex life didn'y kill him.

I called it, they are saying heart disease. It's almost always heart and diet related at this age. if it's natural

take care of yourselves, guys

great voice; awesome performer. Rest in peace, George Micheal.

Yeah, and I am glad I was willing to give him a second chance since he turned out some great stuff despite his debut with that idiotic "wake me up (before you go go)"

In other news Keith Richards is still rocking.

Ever hear Henry Rollins' eulogy to the Clash's Joe Strummer who died from a heart attack?

not really my thing, but it's a well crafted and excellently performed pop song. very talented singer and performer.

Doesn't AIDS cause heart problems?

Is 2016 over yet?????Will the mods allow me to say "f" 2016?

RIP George.

I don't know. you seem pretty keen to pin AIDS on the dude. He's dead

Because I've mentioned it once? Don't you think it's a possibility that he had AIDS?

when a 53 year old man who doesn't have a history of serious other potentially fatal conditions suddenly dies and has a history of promiscuous gay sex including having a relationship with a man who did die of AIDS its a reasonable suspicion. Especially since his one stated medical trauma in the past was pneumonia which is accentuated, in seriousness, by those who have compromised immune systems. I remember in 1981, when I was a first year law student, I would read the NYT every sunday in the law library. And after several months I started wondering why the obituary section had some many young and middle aged men dying of "pneumonia". Having had, by the time was a 22, viral, and bacterial pneumonia I asked a doctor I knew at the University what was going on and he noted that there were suspicions that some sort of immunity compromising issue was hitting gay men. It of course was later called AIDS

by their late 40's early 50s a lot of mean start having heart attacks as well.

I wouldn't doubt that he had a combination of issues.

But no matter the cause, we lost a great talent.

yeah I know-Arthur Ashe had one at 36 or so and one of my best friends in HS died 48 from one. But until we know the COD for GM, speculation will continue. And I think we both know that lots of things that kill people are often called "heart attacks" because its true your heart always stops when you die

I always just thought heart attacks and heart disease were just that. I have a cousin that died at 48 too from a heart attack

There is a pretty good debate topic sadly for 2016

Who was the most talented musician to die this year

Keith Emerson
Paul Kantner
Prince
David Bowie
Greg Lake
George Michael

and several others

all on that list have strong arguments in their favor.

I'd say Prince, because he's the only one on that list who I've really listened to before.

well he has strong credentials-35 years of work, multi-instrumentalist whose guitar work was top drawer, great songwriter. David bowie had 50 years of work, not as strong a instrumentalist as the other but was cutting edge as both a glam rocker and a straight hard rocker, brilliant song writer, wonderful singer, did lots to promote people who worked with him, and a talented actor. Paul Kantner-one of the giants of the incredibly influential San Francisco "Psychedelic" rock scene: his science fiction based lyrics seem still fresh today, great singer, very good guitarist. Greg Lake-cutting edge progressive rocker first with King Crimson and then with ELP, though his voice lost much of its range later in life, he was probably the best pure singer in the group and his talent was evident from an early age when he wrote the enduring hit "Lucky Man" at age 12. He also was at the top of the heap when it came to guitar work. Keith Emerson was another cutting edge prog rocker whose work with synthesizers paved the way for many other keyboardists.

That being said, I'd rate Prince probably as the greatest of the group as well but its close even though Bowie, Kantner's and ELPs stuff I like better.

In terms of musical importance and artistic legacy I'd say, in ascending order of contribution, George Michael, Prince, Leonard Cohen and David Bowie all displayed talents most easily described as genius.
