U.S. Abstains as U.N. Security Council Votes to Condemn Israeli Settlements

UNITED NATIONS — Defying extraordinary pressure from President-elect Donald J. Trump and furious lobbying by Israel, the Obama administration on Friday allowed the United Nations Security Council to adopt a resolution that condemned Israeli settlement construction.

The administration’s decision not to veto the measure broke a longstanding American policy of serving as Israel’s sturdiest diplomatic shield at the United Nations.

While the measure will have no practical impact on the ground, it was regarded as a major rebuff to Israel that could increase its isolation over the paralyzed peace process with the Palestinians, who have sought to establish their own state on territory held by Israel.​

You seem to think Obama's policies are good. What do you think he wants to accomplish? Or breaking with Israel could lead to, for that matter.

Or, better yet, did the world stay silent as Russia annexed Crimea? Invasions, or invasive acts, must be called out, no matter who does them.

No but look at the Palestinian population and the Israeli population, does it have to be an Israeli rise and a Palestinian fall ?
Why not respect the borders that UN chose years ago ?

Huh? You realize things happened since 1947, right? The Arabs have attacked the Jews and lost, so obviously the partition plan is long gone. Today the peace process is based on the 1967 lines.

As you mention the 1967 lines and live in Israel, has Israel built settlements beyond the 1967 lines ?
 
First of all Arabs lost because of USA aids to Israel and Moroccan king Hassan II collaboration with the Mossad, secondly why would the world even accept Israeli invasion from the first place ?
Palestinian people lived there for long time but yeah UK will come and simply give another nation their lands and what ? Accuse Arabs of attacking Israel

All settlements were built on unused lands in area C of the West Bank, beyond '67 lines. The territories are disputed. New settlements however aren't built, whenever Israel builds it builds within existing settlements.

The US gave no aid to Israel at those times. Palestinian people refers to who? Those who lived in the land called Palestine, named by the Romans after invading to the land of Israel? They didn't own the land, the British didn't either, but they did control it, as did the Ottomans before them. You're clearly very ignorant on the subject.
 
I fully support the ideal of the existence of the State of Israel; by historical, religious, and right of [re]conquest reasons.

I just don't believe the U.S.A. needs to keep acting like their Big Brother anymore.

Israel has a tight well-armed and well-trained military forces the equal of, if not superior to, any other in the Middle East.

They are also one of the seven (or eight) members of the "Nuclear Club" and seem willing to use their nukes in a tactical war.

Now, since they sincerely believe the entirety of the "promised land" is theirs as a gift from God it is not unreasonable (when looking at things from their point of view) for them to seek to take control of and re-populate it with their people.

The Palestinians have three choices. They can either move out to Jordan or Egypt; try to assimilate peacefully into the Jewish State; or keep fighting.

Whatever the choice, it should not be OUR problem in the U.S.A. :coffeepap:

No, the Arabs lost because other then the Arab Legion, their armies were poorly trained conscripts who refused to coordinate with each other. Then again, the Jordanians have always been a bit more on the ball then the Syrians or Egyptians.

I have some friends who are Jews and are in locked allegiance to Obama and the Dems.

Will this invitation to the new Holocaust affect the allegiance of the American Jews to the Democrat Party while the Democrat Party demonstrates its Anti Semitism?

One of those Democrat party loyalist Jews at Thanksgiving Dinner in condemning Trump noted that Fascism has a particular smell.

What smell, I wonder, is wafting to her nostrils right now...

The biggest problem is with the settlements locations which carve up the land that would be part of any viable Palestinian State. They destroy even the hope of a peace and amount to a permenate occupation.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner was the first to condemn the building Wednesday, saying the plan, “contradicts previous public statements by the government of Israel that it had no intention of creating new settlements. And this settlement's location deep in the West Bank, far closer to Jordan than Israel, would link a string of outposts that effectively divide the West Bank and make the possibility of a viable Palestinian state more remote.”

Palestine belonged to Jordan. Palestine has never been a sovereign nation, nor are the Palestinians a nationality, or an ethnic group.
