The only reason Medicare still exists is that there was a Democratic Senate (now gone) and Obama (soon to be gone). The obstacles are out of the way, the right can finally get its wish. Pop those champaign corks! We're about to start getting some of our money back from the old folks.

Im saying director of OMB doesnt really have policy power. What will happen next? Who knows? Trump is a wildcard and has no guiding principles. Ryan isnt budget committee anymore, so while he has influence, hes not in a writing position anymore. And dont underestimate the democrats and liberal media ability to demonize any attempt to cut entitlements, taxes, or any spending whatsoever.

Ryan's influence over the ideological and policy commitments of the House GOP remains large. Indeed, the key committee chairman are all Ryanites. This is the likely next budget chair around the time he was voting for the first Ryan budget to privatize Medicare: Rokita: Nation’s fiscal overhaul must begin with Medicare.

The outgoing budget chairman, also a proponent of privatizing Medicare, is of course Trump's pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services.

Meanwhile, Trump has put another Ryanite Medicare-privatizer in charge of making his budgets.
