Black employees file class-action lawsuit against CNN, Turner | Radio and TV Talk

Former and current black employees on Tuesday filed a class action lawsuit against Atlanta-based CNN, Turner Broadcasting and New York based parent company Time Warner for racial discrimination.

“As a result of the current discrimination lawsuit filed on behalf of DeWayne Walker vs. CNN, Time Warner & Turner, we have uncovered stories involving abuse of power, nepotism, revenge, retaliation and discrimination” said Daniel Meachum said in a press release.
The press release provided a photo of DeWayne Walker, a CNN producer who sued CNN individually in January for $50 million for racial discrimination and retaliation for filing a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. He accused CNN of not promoting him over 13 years because he is black, skipped over frequently for promotions in favor of white employees.

I'm always bothered by the phrase "skipped over frequently for promotions". It's not about taking turns. You either deserve it, or you don't. Promotions aren't participation trophies.

While you shouldn't be discriminated against for being black, you also shouldn't be promoted because you are black. Quota-thinking and affirmative action hurt minorities more than anything because it masks the real issues in hand in their communities.

hard case to prove as long as time warner is promoting black people into other positions then these people don't have a case.
simply being there a long time is not qualification for a promotion. one would hope to be promoted and get a promotion that long but
it is not mandatory that you be promoted.

Frequently or always?

There you go, those are liberal companies and it looks like their racist as well.

Then again, it's hard to see how other people are so much better than him that he never gets promoted for 13 years, but the devil is in the details. One thing I've learned is that liberals are all about "equal opportunity" but only for themselves. It wouldn't surprise me if the allegations are true.

Maybe he was a black conservative. Then it is certainly okay to skip over him. He would obviously, to them, have to be substandard. And this way they could genuinely say, "I know black conservatives, I have a friend that is a black conservative..."

Are you black?

As I understand the article Wayne is suing because he believes he has been discriminated against because he is black NOT because he believes he should be promoted because he is black. There is a difference, which you conveniently failed to recognize. Or it could be that you automatically assume Wayne is suing because he sees his minority status as a way to get something he doesn't deserve? If so, shame on you.

Oddly enough, i agree with you.

Someone who is suing their employer for $50 million dollars over "not getting promoted" sounds a little iffy. Their case sounds basically circumstantial- based on statistics of promotions and evaluations of blacks being lower.

I know a black guy that was skipped over for getting fired, probably because the employer was scared of a lawsuit like this. Fear of racism should not compel us to reward incompetence.

Conservatives don't seem to know how to react to this. On one hand, a 'liberal company' is practicing discrimination, on the other a black guy is trying to get a promotion he hasn't earned.
Oh well, no doubt it'll all get hashed out here. No need to involve judges.

I don't know if we'll get back to strict performance based evaluations, but IMO, that's where it should be. If you can do the job, great. If you can do it better than that guy over there, you can have it. If you demonstrate your abilities, you can be promoted to a position where they are better utilized.

13 years experience? or 1 year experience 13 times?

CNN getting a taste of their own medicine..

If that was a conservative media outlet all hell would be breaking loose..
