No bail for 15-year-old charged with decapitating classmate

12/5/16

LAWRENCE, Mass. — A 15-year-old boy charged with killing a high school classmate whose headless body was found near a river said in a police report made public Monday that they had gone to smoke marijuana together and he had last seen the classmate alive.

Mathew Borges was held without bail after pleading not guilty at his brief arraignment in Lawrence District Court on a murder charge. Borges is being prosecuted as an adult, so court proceedings were open. His lawyer, Edward Hayden, did not argue for bail.

The body of 16-year-old Lee Manuel Viloria-Paulino was found near the Merrimack River in Lawrence on Thursday by a woman walking her dog. Police recovered his head nearby. His forearms had also been cut off, but it was unclear if they were recovered.

The parents didn't do very well socializing this one. Shouldn't they be held responsible in some way?

Potentially but it is more likely that he is just a born nut-case.

Sometimes biology makes errors.

It's way to difficult to define how much of a role the parents played in this teenagers attitude.
As long as the parents didn't abuse their son, they shouldn't have any charges brought up against them.

How would you legislate something like this ? How would you prove beyond reasonable doubt that this teenagers upbringing led to this murder ?

Slippery slope if you ask me.

Parents should bring their kids up right. At least, to the point, where the kid doesn't decapitate people. If they aren't willing to put in the effort and thought, they should pay for the consequencess. Don't you think?

I don't think he decapitated people solely because his parents did not raise him correctly. The problem is more complex than that.

And you think the parents didn't have indications of this?

All problems are complex in some way or another.

I would remind you that the perp is being tried as an adult, so either he is a kid or he is an adult, but one cannot be both. While the parents might have been negligent, there comes a point where the actions of the child are the child's responsibility to deal with the consequences.

True. And we should revisit the issue, as the problem has become obvious.

So you think that every parent who thinks their son os having a bit of a flakey time should commit them to what???

The parent should certainly do due diligence at least until the kid is of age. If she detects behavior she cannot handle, she should get counseling.

And when the kid has just come out of such counciling and goes down to the river with his mate and cuts the other kid's head off?????

At least the parent tried and the councilor gets a new job.
