Sarah Palin: Trump's Carrier deal is 'crony capitalism'

As far as we know President Trump made a phone call and smooth talked them into staying.
Its President Elect and it is quite clear that "smooth talking" can only work on self proclaimed conservatives.

He may have promised to keep Carrier's products tied up in customs to the point where Carrier starts losing money on those units.
Yea, Presidents do that a lot :lamo:lamo:lamo

It's hard for me to talk about Palin, whether her "crony capitalism" comment means anything or not.

That's because I'm still shaking my head at all this "Trump declares victory" talk when Carrier is still planning on sending some jobs in Indiana to Mexico.

Some jobs aren't being sent to Mexico by Carrier .. some jobs are being sent to Mexico by Carrier.

Was this some "great victory" because not all the jobs planned to be sent to Mexico are being sent because "Trump told them not to"?

What about the jobs Trump couldn't stop Carrier from off-shoring -- isn't that still a great loss?

Wouldn't this be a "great victory" for American jobs only if all the Carrier planned off-shored jobs weren't gonna get off-shored?

The hell with Palin.

The hell with Trump.

What about the jobs Carrier is still gonna off-shore to Mexico? That's the issue!

Once that two-faced feckless coward Obama is out of the White House Trump will have more direct control. Carrier has a lot of other government contracts that could be in jeopardy if Trump applies the thumbscrews. In the meantime the Republican controlled Congress will be on the hook of they don't scale back the tax-credits corporations are allowed to use when jobs are outsourced. Why are you bashing Trump for this? At least he did something. Obama sat their and mocked people as they lost their jobs saying that they deserved to be unemployed.

I guess Sarah doesn't want that cabinet job anyways.

Sarah Palin: Trump's Carrier deal is 'crony capitalism'

“When government steps in arbitrarily with individual subsidies, favoring one business over others, it sets inconsistent, unfair, illogical precedent,” she asserted.

And in an apparent jab at Trump, whom she famously endorsed in a rambling speech earlier this year, she asked: “Republicans oppose this, remember? Instead, we support competition on a level playing field, remember? Because we know special interest crony capitalism is one big fail.”

On this point she is 100% correct. Of course Trump currently possesses no actual authority, perhaps defense contracts were threatened? Not sure, but what's amazing is that this mode of incentiviziing corporations isn't new, the Carrier example itself isn't even remarkable and its something which occurs in red and blue states alike.

Doesn't the Left claim she's stupid?

Well, as a member of the left, I for one, never said she was stupid. In fact, I think she is quite intelligent. I do think, however, she is incredibly ignorant and intellectually lazy.... which often yields the same result.

First Donald Trump is elected to be POTUS?

Now Sarah Palin says something I agree with politically?

The world has gone mad.

Good for her for saying this and for coming out against what Trump did when many are applauding him for it.

I disagree, because this isn't a case of the, "government", stepping in, "arbitrarily with individual subsidies, favoring one business over others". As far as we know President Trump made a phone call and smooth talked them into staying. Maybe he promised something. He may have promised to keep Carrier's products tied up in customs to the point where Carrier starts losing money on those units.

'Crony capitalism is a term describing an economy in which success in business depends on close relationships between business people and government officials. It may be exhibited by favoritism in the distribution of legal permits, government grants, special tax breaks, or other forms of state interventionism.'

Sounds exactly what Trump did. The President Elect of the United States stepped in and directly influenced a corporation with threads/promises to get them to do something he wanted them to do.
He did not say 'all manufacturers will get said benefits'. He specifically targeted Carrier.

Sarah Palin is right, imo.

Once again, I am neither Dem nor Rep.

I say no way. Carrier is under the umbrella of a corporation that builds ALL the engines for the F-35 (among TONS of other things). There is NO WAY Trump would be so monumentally stupid as to threaten pulling the contract for that just to save a few hundred HVAC jobs. And I guarantee you Carrier knows it as well.
The cost to re-engine the planes, the number of jobs lost and on and on. Trump would look like a complete boob if he cancelled the entire F135 engine deal (not to mention the huge number of other things they manufacture that are important to national defense) over a couple hundred HVAC jobs.

Even Trump cannot be that clueless.

ah, the hypocrisy of the hard core conservatives is obiviously proved by their remarks on this thread.

they want to get rid of medicare but support corporate socialism.

their mindset is aristocratic.
