Yorktown in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, on Monday, Trump referenced the use by ISIS of social media as a recruitment tool. He recommended a discussion with Bill Gates to shut off parts of the Internet.

"We're losing a lot of people because of the Internet," Trump said. "We have to go see Bill Gates and a lot of different people that really understand what's happening. We have to talk to them about, maybe in certain areas, closing that Internet up in some way. Somebody will say, 'Oh freedom of speech, freedom of speech.' These are foolish people. We have a lot of foolish people."

He wants to shut down isis propaganda..

He could do that easily on the clearnet, they shut down tons of **** on the clearnet..

Anyone using the darknet prolly is either already isis or is not a good propaganda target for isis.

All of you **** Trump and his tyrannical authoritarian administration do realise that Hillary proposed basically the exact same plan for her administration.

This is an issue that Dump and Frump both agreed on.

It would be happening if two time looser Clinton won.


Were was the outrage over her saying this last Dec.

I must have missed it, but the slight difference is that she lost and anything she may or has said amounts to ramblings now, while what Trump is saying is either confirmation of his ignorance and stupidity which in itself is concerning, or he might be serious which is really concerning.
 
You would think he would at least call Al Gore fer Christ's sake.

How would you go about doing that? Certainly you can shut down a website but people would just create another website.

The Internet is designed to be to very hard to break.

The deepweb is very hard to break, the clearweb not so much..

Look at the great firewall of china, you can still access the deepweb from Cina and then the rest of the clearnet if you want..

You see any silk roads on the clearnet selling drugs and hitmen? No, they would get shut down, but can exist on the deepweb..

Propaganda isn't going to do you any good on the deep web though because the people that are there are already there for a reason..

So isis could use the deepweb from china to communicate or whatever they want, but your not going to see and isis propaganda on the chineese clearweb behind the great firewall..

I'm all for shutting down any isis or suspected isis activity on the clearweb just like they do drug merchants or anything else illegal..

Twitter, they just aren't ambitious enough...

I'd say that if Trump told twitter to stop all the isis or get shut right down, twitter would get more ambitious..

Also, they might not be shutting them down, so they are easier to survail and keep tabs on..

Who knows..

The network topologies in China and US are completely different. The Chinese government owns the wires and routers and can turn them off at will. That can't be done in the United States, there are far too many network links owned by private companies and, worse, too much of our commerce depends on the Internet.

And you can't - at least with the current generation of filtering technology - turn off certain content without turning off a lot of content that you don't want. And that's aside from the legal issues around doing so. What works in China isn't going to work in free society.

It should be concerning that both if the major parties candidates are in favor of government censorship of the internet in the name of security. It should be even more concerning that supporters of these candidates did not pay attention to the censorship plans both douches agreed on.
It also should be concerning that these ideas of censorship are New to anyone. Both candidates have spoken about this for close to a year before the election.

I find it concerning that more folks got worked up over Clinton's fainting spells or Trump calling someone fat than the candidates agreeing on **** free speech policies.

If Trump told twitter "if you don't do a better job of stopping isis propaganda I will shut you down"

Then either
A. twitter gets more ambition to stop the propaganda..
b. twitter gets shut right down
c. Trump was bluffing

Twitter complains "oh well we rely on user reporting and its haarrrdd wahh"

Well if twitter spend another $1mm a year on moderators they could do a better job.

They just won't shut the whole twitter down just for a little isis, under obama..

But if it was isisishere dot com, they would shut it right down..

Of if they found isis was using granniesflowersnstuff.com they would just shut it right down..

But twitter would be like shutting down chase bank because 2 isis guys had accounts, not gonna happen..
They will stop what isis using chase they can but wont stop chase..

That story's kind of a two-fer:

What makes you thing that POTUS has the power to shut twitter down? Either legally or politically?

And even if he did Twitter is hardly the only way to communicate.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I am sure that backing up claims with links is very helpful and also saves bandwidth because then people don't have to ask you to cite your sources.

First of all, clearly he didn't mean shutting down the Internet as you like to imply.


This is what will really happen: Trump will find someone very knowledgeable and experienced to look into the problem and advise him what can/should be done. He'll confer with lawyers and other advisors before making a decision as to what policy to push for. Congress and the courts will also have their say.


The end result definately won't be the "closing up" of the Internet.
