It was pointed out to me that Fidel didn't have a RIP thread so I thought i would start one.
The man that toppled a corrupt government, survived numerous assassination attempts, survived a coup attempt, survived the collapse of the Soviet Union and ultimately survived the US trade embargo.
A man with many flaws however his political achievements are astonishing.

Rot in Hell, Fidel

The world is a better place now that you are gone

Re: RIP Fidel Castro

Goodbye you murderous POS.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro

RIP Castro.

I wonder how many years it'll be before the damage he's done to Cuba will have healed.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro

What will happen in Cuba after all of the Castro family have gone to their rewards?

Any ideas on that?

Toppling a corrupt government to insert your own personal rule for life isn't much of an achievement.

Moderator's Warning:
Since the poster's original intent was clear, the R.I.P. tag has now been properly applied. I suggest all posters be mindful of what that means:

- With the recognition that the passing of political leaders (and other figures) can be a tumultuous time stirring up a variety of feelings, from sorrow to elation, the Mod Team has strove to find a solution that will allow all facets of discussion concerning a persons death be done in a civil matter. New threads with a thread tag in the *Breaking News* section, the “R.I.P.” tag should be treated with the same general respect and etiquette one would show at a funeral. It is a thread for members to express their grief or condolences and to speak about the dead or the family of the dead in a respectful way, free of mud slinging. The same story that is used in a R.I.P thread may be used to create a standard thread about the matter as well (and vise versa). Conversation in this thread will run per the normal rules of Debate Politics. Personal attacks about individuals speaking ill of the dead, as per the standard rules, will not be allowed. As long as the discussion remains within the rules and on topic it is fair game.

Long and short of it; any comment in a R.I.P. thread that wouldn't be tactful at a funeral can cause you to get points and a thread ban.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro

Mods adding the RIP tag to thread titles kind of pisses me off frankly.

I think the person starting the thread does that, although it's possible a mod may add it later if the OP requests it because they forgot to.

The thread in question did not have the tag until Gina added it. The fact that she has the nerve to infract people for posts made before she added it is another thing all together, but worth noting.

Also, the OP post was erased by her and he was put on vacation. If you read the OP before she erased it you would know there was no intent on his part for it to be a RIP thread.

Dude, you don't know that and I don't think that's the case at all. It's pretty clear from the OP that he intended this as a RIP thread.

I read the OP of that thread this morning before she was even online and I assure you it was not like it is now.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro

What a great day! I love it when evil people die.

That's actually not true at all. You'll see I posted in that thread very early on. The RIP was there from the beginning.

So evil that Obama didn't condem him today? So evil that the Pope met with him a few years ago?
We are so self righteous in the West that's it's not even funny.

Congrats, I think you've found the world's thinnest argument. To each their own though.

Obama and the current pope are farther left than previous examples of their kind

An endorsement from them is nothing to be proud of

It was actually John Paul the second.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro [W:9]

Totally agree with the OP, the man had flaws, was hated in the West and it is part of American culture to denigrate anything Castro did but he survived years of US led machinations and is generally revered in Africa as part of the forces of liberation.
In some places, that liberation led from colonial dictators to home grown dictators but it is still preferable to have the rare possibility of freedom in your own nation.

Its rather difficult to describe a person who routinely violated the rights of others as anything other than evil, but give it a try.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro [W:9]

I never liked Castro, but he did one thing that was pretty amazing. In spite of the heavy sanctions placed on Cuba, he made Cuba self-suffient. Cubans are still driving cars that were manufactured in the 1950's because the economy was tooled for resusing just about everything. Nothing went to waste. People still grow rooftop gardens for food. Under Castro, Cuba educated everybody, and the education was free of charge. Once doctors were educated, they went around the world curing illness. Healthcare was also free of charge. As much as a despot Castro was, it pains me to see that his people were more educated and healthy than our own people, right here in the US.

Castro's main problem? Those who didn't agree with him disappeared or were sent to re-education camps. But nobody was illiterate in Cuba, and nobody went hungry.

So yes, he was a horrible person, but he was also a great person. It depends which side of the fence you were on if you lived in Cuba.

So, Fidel, as much as I dislike you, I wish you well in the afterlife.

Afterthought..... Cuba, under Castro, did beat Coca Cola, United Fruit, and the oil companies.

I can't believe you even typed this.

Not a shred of morality or integrity, holy crap.

Cuba was heavily dependent on the Soviets, they just became a pawn of the USSR. From imperialist hand to another.

The way I've heard Cubans say it is that Cuban politicians used the US, the Soviets and now the Chinese and Russians to keep the island afloat and all the others have used the island as a local stronghold. Which if you think of it, there isn't a point in time in which the island wasn't a stronghold for one state or another. Then again because of the strong differences of the people in power pre and post 1959, I'd be really surprised if this wasn't true. It would certainly be far easier to show than Cubans being "used".

Given how wrong I was about Trump, I'll take a humble route and predict we won't see a deliberate government change absent something like what we saw in the Arab Spring.

Re: RIP Fidel Castro [W:9]

Cuba was heavily dependent on the Soviets,

Due to the US embargo. The Cubans had to trade with someone.
