North Carolina Gov. Pat McCrory has formally requested a statewide recount of votes in his close race with Democratic challenger Roy Cooper, as pressure mounts on the incumbent Republican to concede two weeks after the election.
McCrory is claiming voter fraud, and has filed complaints in half the counties, although the Republican controlled election boards say that he has presented no evidence of fraud. But what McCrory is actually doing is this:
Critics see McCrory's effort as a stall tactic, one intended to undermine the results of the election and potentially cause the state's Republican-controlled General Assembly to step in and settle the race in McCrory's favor.
That's right. In North Carolina, there is a provision that the State Assembly can name the winner, thus overturning the results of an election. The State Assembly is Republican controlled. But are they willing to do it?
"There's no way that throwing out the results of a gubernatorial election are going to be popular in a court of public opinion," Jensen said. "They don't need a Republican governor, so why risk the backlash?"
This is going to be an election to watch. Will Republicans overturn the election and keep McCrory in office? My guess is no, because the Republican supermajority can easily stop anything Governor Cooper wants to do. But McCrory is about to take a longshot gamble in order to try and stay in power.
