Trump 'seriously considering' Ben Carson for HUD secretary

I think Carson is on the right side of this one. What does he know about climate change?

"Dr. Carson feels he has no government experience, he's never run a federal agency."

Sure, that's why he ran for something a little more light weight: the office of the President of the United States.

Um, while in the Senate, Hillary served on the Armed Services committee, which right there gives her plenty of qualification for that position.

Yeah, yeah, "cankles." We get it, you hate her guts and will never admit that she was ever qualified for anything.

wow, the love for someone who got their job purely due to their husband's name is strong but was she a diplomat? a military officer who was well versed on foreign affairs? No

what was her qualifications to be a senator or SOS

Yale Law (senator is a position that deals with law, you know) -> Congressional legal aid -> Law practice -> first lady -> elected to senate -> SOS

Medical school -> Surgeon -> ??? -> Housing and Urban Development!?

So Hillary had no foreign policy credentials at all.

LOL. "Watch me point out some arbitrary qualifications Hillary doesn't have, then conclude because she failed my made up test, she was unqualified!"

Was George Schultz a diplomat or military officer? He was SoS from 82-89?

the point is-Carson is just as qualified for the position he is being considered for as many other cabinet picks of several administrations

You'd think we could strive to better than some of the cabinet picks of the last several administrations. If Carson accepts, I hope he's a quick learner. I'm not thrilled at all about the pick.

Ben Carson might be a good one. Intelligent man. The only one elected that wouldn't have **** for brains.

what sort of pick would you like? someone who has run a big bureaucracy? Remember Jocelyn Elders? or Everett Koop?

Wasn't born for either of them so not really.

Not looking for anything specific in a pick. But a threshold of some sort of experience touching at least a little on the subject of the Department.

OK fair enough. I don't know how much hands on administrative duties cabinet heads have save for the DOJ

So I think the point of your example is other cabinet picks had no qualifications at all (in your view). Therefore, if Trump nominates Carson, we shall (must?) presume him qualified. QED.

I believe I disagree strongly with that... :doh

But I also acknowledge that Carson (or really anyone else) could hire a handful or less of first rate deputies, listen to their advice, allow them to run things day to day, and probably do fine. It just shifts the real running of something to that person or persons.

why not tell us what you think the qualifications should be?

I'm just objecting to the premise that there is no utility in considering whether someone is or isn't qualified for a cabinet pick.

As for qualifications, I'll speak in general terms. Seems to me the head of an agency should be able to speak on the major missions of the agency and have enough experience/knowledge going in for any of us to actually care what he/she has to say on the subject. I can't imagine why I'd care at all what Carson has to say on housing, FNMA, GSEs in general, home loans, the mortgage market, low income housing, or anything else under HUD's purview, because he's demonstrated no interest or knowledge in those subjects that I'm aware of, and has zero professional qualifications for evaluating them. Physicians often think they know a lot about a lot of things, and they're generally pretty ignorant about anything but medicine, IME. So I have a personal bias against them for roles outside their natural expertise. Obvious exceptions!!!...blah blah.

But like I said above, he could hire a few very qualified underlings and probably do fine as a figurehead, but that shouldn't be the point of a cabinet pick, IMO.

He thinks the pyramids were used for grain storage and that Satan invented the big bang theory. (and it violates thermodynamics)

He's good at surgery, but clearly allows his religion to overwhelm any rational assessment of reality. Lots of horsepower in that brain of his, but he's not leaving his garage.
