Pope Francis extends Catholic priests' right to forgive abortion

Less so in the New Testament, but yes. But it is within priests' power to forgive, and it is forgivable according to Jesus Christ.

How many times can you be forgiven for conducting abortions?

You can read. Jesus gave power to forgive sins to the Apostles and said that the only unforgivable sin was blasphemy.

You're just sore because it goes against your politics. Which you can't seperate from your religion.

Uh, no...you made a clame. Now, support it.

The Pope is making a call based on politics and not scripture.

But being pro choice Is grounded firmly in the Bible.

Who is pro-choice and religious?
Denominations with official and long-standing pro-choice positions include

the Presbyterian Church (USA),
the Episcopal Church,
the United Methodist Church,
the United Church of Christ,
the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations,
and Reform and Conservative Judaism.

These organizations have a diversity of views about abortion and recognize it as a morally complex decision that must be made by the person most affected--the woman.

Among religious groups, the pro-choice position is nuanced,
recognizing that most people believe abortion--as well as bearing children-are matters for individual conscience,
not government or religious mandate.

Pro-choice denominations don't seek to impose their views on others or to make them law.

They recognize that in our pluralistic society,
politicians must not be allowed to impose laws about childbearing based on any particular belief about when life begins.
The notion that life begins at the moment of conception is a belief held by some, but not all, religious groups.

Not sure how I come down on this...I think my feeling is that we should all strive to forgive, however, it is up to God's judgement to truly absolve these women whom have taken the lives of God's most defenseless....Thoughts?

This is not a big change. Abortion was previously classified as a reserved sin - a sin that can only be absolved by or with express permission of a Bishop or a Cardinal. Now any confessor Priest can grant this absolution without involving a superior. It also standardizes the rules where previously some Bishops allowed Priests in their Diocese to grant the absolution directly and others did not.

I never did figure out why certain Christian groups decided that God's forgiveness was something to be doled out, or not, by mortals.

Catholicism isn't one of those groups. The Catholic Church teaches that only God can forgive sins. Clergy may grant absolution - which reconciles the penitent with the Church.

Thankfully someone that actually understands the subject speaks.

I'm sorry for not being familiar with the intricate details of your sky wizard story.

So why does anyone care about being absolved with the church

I am sorry you think I care whether you do or not.
Maybe you should not open you mouth on the topic, being you admit you are ignorant.

The commission of piccata mortalia or "mortal sins" results in latae sententiae excommunication. The granting of absolution lifts the punishment of sin in this life (excommunication) and restores the penitent's connection to the grace of God's mercy with a renewed right to receive the Eucharist administered by the Church.
