Noisy political theater is in full swing: protest marches over President-elect Donald Trump’s victory have warranted considerable coverage by the media. But does the nation as a whole share in the protesters’ angry insistence that Mr. Trump is “not my president?” Well, maybe not.

“Now that Trump has been declared the winner and will be inaugurated in January, will you accept him as the legitimate president, or not?” asks a new Gallup poll.
The numbers: 84 percent of Americans said they accept Mr. Trump; that number includes 76 percent of those who supported Hillary Clinton. The pollster had similar findings when it asked the same question during the 2000 election, which ultimately relied on Supreme Court decision to pronounce George W. Bush the victor over Al Gore.
“Americans rated the campaign more negatively than any in recent memory. Even so, the majority, 58 percent, say the 2016 election process has not caused permanent harm to the U.S., although 38 percent say it has,” writes Gallup analyst Jeffrey Jones.

There is no option on accepting that he won the election. That said do keep in mind that nearly half of all voters did not vote and that more than half that did vote voted for Hillary or a third Party candidate, meaning less than one 1/4 of the voting population elected trump.

I think repubs are going to very disappointed when trump does not much of what he sad he would, and in the end they ma be more disappointed in trump than many of those that opposed him. My guess is that most conservative actions will be done by the Republican Congress not the new guy in the WH.

I'm not sure I understand your question. People who voted for him will accept him (thus the reason they voted for him). He might not have been their first choice, but if they were truly in denial of him winning or Hillary not winning, then they just would have stayed home.

What you're saying is more spin. Normal elections have a turnout of much less than the actual voters who can vote. Look at the map - it is red all over. Yes, the popular vote was close, but the number of cities and towns across America voted for Trump. To me, that says much more than what you are implying.

As for disappointment. I was very disappointed by what Obama did and did not do while in office. I think it goes without saying that while people want him to accomplish everything he stated, realistically there will only be a fraction accomplished. But for me, if he comes down strong on illegal immigration, on Isis and on Obamacare - it is a BIG win. If he elects some conservatives to the Supreme Court to help keep the balance of power, that too will be a Big Win.

Anything other than that is icing on the cake - yes, like sending Hillary to jail.

The people who relied on the old soon to be extinct Main Stream Media might have thought he did not have a chance. Anyone who paid attention on the net realized otherwise. The people who voted for him wanted Trump to win and that is why they accept him.

Actually he is a hard spot here. I think he wants to forget about Hillary but he promised he would have the AG appoint a special prosecutor if people voted for him. That was a big motivator for a lot of folks. Why should he worry about what the people that voted for Hillary thinks? They voted and he won by about 74 electoral votes. There is no way for him to avoid it unless Obama gives her a pardon. That is a pretty complicated mess. Does she get a pardon for the email server thing? What about the foundation problems or the campaign finance problems? It would have to be a long list of pardons and that would be admitting that she broke the law. It would leave a stain on Obama's legacy, which is already falling apart.

Yeah, ain't that great? But the margin of error on this one is so small compared to the stats they published that the poll still stands.
