Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leon Russell has died in Nashville at the age of 74. His wife, Jan, said through an intermediary that the legendary musician and songwriter had passed away in his sleep in Nashville.

Russell "had heart bypass surgery in July and was recovering from that," his record company tells NPR in confirming Russell's death. The musician had been hoping to resume touring in January.
A native of Oklahoma, Russell's talents — and his unique ability to span country and gospel, blues and rock — led him to collaborate with many of the finest musicians of the past 50 years, from Joe Cocker and B.B. King to Elton John and Willie Nelson.

Thanks a lot for Leon. Was in his time from Gary Lewis and the Playboys on. He was in touch with everybody muscical. He always had that scowl.

He sure played a mean piano.

I was lucky to know him. (and lucky to know his beautiful family)

as i recall (vaguely) during and immediately after the mad dogs and englishmen tour, there was a rift between russell and joe cocker - i believe cocker was of the opinion he had been ripped off, financially - did you ever hear any insight into that relationship

Not ripped off. Joe was angry because Leon basically "stole the show", and that was the reason he later got his own "movie" which of course never got "completed" until fifteen years later when the lost reels were dumped into my lap.

The Deep Freeze Story

(Yes, proceeds are shared with the family, because it's the right thing to do)

The good ususually die young, but there are a few who escaped the curse of 27. Leon was one of those, and he ended up kicking ass all the way into old age. RIP Leon.

Bummer, I totally missed that Leon and Cohen had passed. RIP to 2 great musicians.

He walked off the stage at the City Winery in Nashville TN and had a heart attack a week later.
He had bypass surgery and had been in cardiac rehab and recovery.
His wife said he was serenading the nurses and asking for Cheerios a few days after the surgery.

He was optimistic about his recovery and said he'd been planning to restart his 24 gig tour and maybe even go back into the studio again.
He went home in the third week of August and died in his sleep at 4:30 AM, November 13, 2016.
