Iraq ?ready for war? with Turkey over who should control Mosul after Isis | The Independent

Iraq and Turkey are threatening to go to war with each other over who should hold power in Mosul and the surrounding region after the defeat of Isis. Turkish tanks and artillery have deployed along the border and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi has said that while Iraq “did not want war with Turkey” it is ready to fight one if necessary.

The confrontation is sharpening as the Iraqi Army enters eastern Mosul and Shia militia known as the Hashd al-Shaabi advance towards the town of Tal Afar, threatening to cut Isis’s last escape route from Mosul to Syria. Turkey sees itself as the protector of the Sunni Arabs of Mosul and northern Iraq, a community left vulnerable by the likely defeat of Isis by Shia and Kurdish forces backed by US-led airpower.

The dependence of the anti-Isis forces on air strikes and drones was underlined on Wednesday when Iraqi Special Forces delayed their advance into east Mosul because high humidity and clouds made it difficult for aircraft to identify and attack targets on the ground. They had entered the industrial suburb of Gogjali on Tuesday and were Wednesday going from house to house looking for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and booby traps.

The population of Mosul east of the Tigris River, which divides the city in half, has in the past consisted largely of well-educated professional people such as doctors and engineers, few of whom are likely to be sympathetic to Isis. Residents in the east say they expected Isis to withdraw to the western side of Mosul, which is more sympathetic to them, crossing the five bridges spanning the Tigris which, the residents say, have been rigged with demolition charges.

The Iraqi government reacted angrily to the possibility of Turkish intervention. “The invasion of Iraq will lead to Turkey being dismantled,” said Mr Abadi at a news conference in Baghdad on Tuesday. “We do not want war with Turkey, and we do not want a confrontation with Turkey, but if a confrontation happens, we are ready for it.” He added that Iraq would consider Turkey as an enemy and would deal with it as an enemy.

Holy crap guys. This is effing exciting!!

Yet another reason we should stay out of the ME. Way to volatile.

Iraqis were afraid to fight ISIS and they're gonna fight a real military like what the Turks have? Sensationalism, thy name is.....

The reason why ISIS has some good weaponry right now is BECAUSE the Iraqis turned and ran. Don't see them fighting Turkey IMO.

Erdogan also stated numerous times that Turkey does not agree with the borders imposed after WW1.
Next they are mainly Sunni, as is Turkey.
Next, the Shia have been slaughtering Sunni and in substantial numbers after they (Iraq and Militias)captured, IIRC Ramadi.

They can. But only within the context of the movie, obviously.

Well according to moviebodycounts.com the movie with the highest number of deaths was Lord of the Rings: Return of the King and it had 836, not even close to "thousands".

How about A New Hope? Alderaan had billions of people on it, and it was blown to smithereens.

I didn't see anyone die on screen, for all we know they could have made it.

I know right? And the U.S. has obligations to defend both. The military industrial complex is really loving this.

Only a ditzy child who lives life with their head stuck in a smart phone would consider war exciting in any way.

The Turkish government may just be making a show of force to deter any Shiite forces in this operation from attacking Sunnis who live there. The U.S. has considerable influence with Turkey, and the U.S. is playing a big role in the campaign to liberate Mosul.

Yeah, that, and other reasons as well:

Resul Serdar Ataş, the managing editor at TRT World, said: "There are five reasons that motivate Turkey to join the battle. Halting the territorial advance of Kurdish militia; concern about massive refugee inflows; wishing to destroy paramilitary actors in order to prevent a civil war stalemate as in Syria; pushing back against Shia dominance of historically Sunni areas; and desire to influence the political structures in Mosul that will replace Daesh rule." Touching on the claims that Iran-backed Shiite militias may commit violence against Sunnis, he said, "Turkey has a military presence in Bashiqa and it is considered a guarantee for Kurds and Sunni Arabs who are afraid of PMF's violent actions." "Turkey may intervene militarily if the PMF dares to commit any violence," he added.

Mosul may be scene for Turkish-Iranian dispute - Daily Sabah

The statement that especially caught my attention was "wishing to destroy paramilitary actors in order to prevent a civil war stalemate." I'm sure it's crossed the minds of the Turks that once Mosul and Nineveh province are liberated the natural targets for Iranian-supported militias would be Kurds loyal to the Barzani regional government and Sunni rebels battling the Assad government in Syria. So I wouldn't be surprised to see Iran and Turkey come to blows through proxies such as Kurdish peshmerga and the Iranian-supported Popular Mobilization Forces. There is no love lost between these groups, and I don't think the U.S. could stop it if they came to blows.

It's like a freaking action movie but on a global scale.

Have you ever loaded a dead body of one of your countrymen onto a helo?

Or, man a ready lifeboat to retrieve the dead aviation crewmen from a helo that flew itself into the water during night Ops.

Can we give it to the people who lived there 20 years ago? Give it to the Kurds.

Other nations "giving" people territory in their own countries is what caused most of these problems in the first place.
