The United States on Wednesday abstained for the first time in 25 years on a U.N. resolution condemning America's economic embargo against Cuba, a resolution it had always vehemently opposed. The announcement by U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power ahead of a vote later in the day on the resolution was greeted with applause in the 193-member General Assembly.
Power said the U.S. was abstaining because of President Barack Obama's new approach to Cuba, but she made clear that the United States "categorically" rejects statements in the resolution suggesting the embargo violated international law.
She also stressed that abstaining "does not mean that the United States agrees with all of the policies and practices of the Cuban government."
"We do not," Power said. "We are profoundly concerned by the serious human rights violations that the Cuban government continues to commit."

About damn time! Another foot forward in ending this age old embargo that needs to go. Not only did it no achieve its intended results, but it is a stain on our countries policies towards Cuba. Now its essentially the whole world against the GOP lead Congress.

The UN Resolution itself is rather meaningless, just a statement of position on a matter at best with no real enforceable activity resulting from.

But that said, the US embargo against Cuba was a complete failure to achieve anything related to the reasons listed for it. More importantly we look like complete hypocrites giving Cuba **** for their style of governance or track record on human rights, then ignore our relationship with nations like China, or Saudi Arabia, or many others around the globe where economics and/or trade and/or regional influences and/or foreign policy trumps concerns over human rights just about every time.

Meanwhile, the Castro regime remains one of the worst on the planet.
