A crowd of about 1,000 Haitians shouted and shoved at the door of Mexico's immigration agency at the U.S. border, which has found itself an unhappy gateway for thousands of would-be migrants in recent months hoping to cross into the United States.

Several thousand Haitians have traveled to Tijuana in recent months, overflowing migrant shelters and often sleeping outside next to their backpacks on sheets of cardboard, many after traveling 7,000 miles (11,000 kilometers) by foot, taxi and bus from Brazil through eight nations to the threshold of the United States. There have been so many that in August, Mexican authorities imposed a system of appointments in order to keep the Haitians away from the flow of other visitors at one of the world's busiest border crossings.

Time for yet another border surge. This time it's Haitians who've managed to make it all the way to Tijuana from Haiti. Wonder how that happened?

Mexican authorities are eager to see them move north into the U.S.

What should be done here?

A civilized society would have compassion and take them in.

No, a civilized society that has laws restricting mass immigration would deport them back to country of origin.

I'm fairly certain they will be deported, xenophobes have nothing to worry about.

There are 7,400,000,000 people in the world, most of whom don't have our standards of living.

Should we take everyone in who wants to be here?

It's nearly impossible to be xenophobic in 2016 America, unless you live in lily white liberal hideaways like Marin County, or Martha's Vineyard. I think the xenophobia argument is pretty tired and worn out at this point.

Haiti was the poorest nation on earth...so between the earthquake and now this hurricane...there really isn't much left of the country for them to go back to. The sea surge came in and salted all their fields and the killed the banana plantations. I suspect as the sea levels rise a lot more islanders will be migrating to the mainlands.

Really. Who doesn't live around immigrants at this point? I live around people from Central America, Asia, Africa, the Mideast.
You must be really isolated if you're still experiencing xenophobia.

276 million poor people exist in India. Can they be next in line?

11.5 million extremely poor people exist in Mexico. Should we open the floodgates?

Maybe if the Clinton foundation actually delivered aid to Haiti like they were supposed to, there wouldn't be mass migration to our borders.

Exactly. Get used to it.

So since we're basking in multiculturalism, you can stop labeling people as 'xenophobic', just because they don't like the idea of overpopulation.

It isn't an issue of xenophobia, its an issue of being the 3rd highest populated country behind China and India, and recognizing the dangers of overpopulation.

No they would shoot them dead if they attempted to cross unlawfully. A civilized society depends on order and the voluntary and near universal adherence to the law to remain civilized. Otherwise they become third world hellholes were law is that of the jungle.

Well, we are a nation of immigrants...and that's what made this country great. But I think if we're to call ourselves a civilized society then we should do our share of taking in refugees.

Do you realize what the word 'civilize' means?
Here:
civ·i·lize/ˈsivəˌlīz/

verb
bring (a place or people) to a stage of social, cultural, and moral development considered to be more advanced.

The whole reason immigrants want to come to the US is because we're a civilized society.

Empathy is the glue that holds a society together, imo. Without it...people devolve back to tribalism and law of the jungle where there's nothing to assimilate to except hate and fear of others. Thats not a standard of living that any civilized society would wish upon itself....but with the nomination of Trump...it appears that some among us do.

Empathy is well and good. However it is worthless if it results in your demise.

It's called National Sovereignty - and if you can't control who comes into your country, then you don't have it.

LOL what?

Civilized or otherwise, decent human beings feel an obligation to extend a merciful hand to the less fortunate and the wretched. They may not do that to their own detriment, although many make the case of such admirable benevolence, but that is not a justification for cruelty and shameless selfishness - a middle-ground must be struck.

More importantly, what happened to lofty christian ideals of helping the poor and loving all? whatever happened of giving up one's worldly possessions especially in calamitous times? When was it that conservatives made of such noble ideals a partisan affair on which they're on the other side of the isle?

My folks once told me that:

"It's great that you want to help people. But only help people if you are able to. If you help people before you are able to help yourself then you are going to end up in the same position as the people that you are trying to help. Then how are you going to help people?"

$19.6 trillion dollars in debt. IIRC Roughly 10-15 years ago the total debt per citizen was around $48 thousand. Today its roughly $200 thousand. I don't think that we're in a position to be helping ANYONE.
