Russian cyber intelligence is allegedly responsible for the hack which cost Debbie Wasserman Schultz her position as the DNC chairwoman, according to the U.S. government. Republican Ben Sasse of Nebraska has already issued a call to action.
“Today was just the first step,” said Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.), a member of the Homeland Security Committee. “Russia must face serious consequences. Moscow orchestrated these hacks because [Russian President Vladimir] Putin believes Soviet-style aggression is worth it. The United States must upend Putin’s calculus with a strong diplomatic, political, cyber and economic response.”

What does he mean by a 'strong cyber response?' We just handed over the reins to the internet to ICANN.

“The U.S. Intelligence Community is confident that the Russian Government directed the recent compromises of e-mails from U.S. persons and institutions, including from U.S. political organizations,” said a joint statement from the two agencies. “. . . These thefts and disclosures are intended to interfere with the U.S. election process.”

The public finger-pointing was welcomed by senior Democratic and Republican lawmakers, who also said they now expect the administration to move to punish the Kremlin as part of an effort to deter further acts by its hackers.

The DNC publicly disclosed the intrusions in June, saying its investigation determined that Russian government hackers were behind the breach. That was followed shortly after by a major leak of DNC emails, some so embarrassing that they forced the resignation of the DNC chairwoman, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (Fla.), on the eve of the Democratic National Convention.

I predict US officials will begin to run out of diplomatic options the longer their Russian counterparts continue to press their buttons. I think this announcement has come too late to have any impact on the issue other than to worsen our relations with Russia. Did it take this long for the proof to surface? I'd like to know what proof there is of an attack originating from Russia. Even if the hack did occur, that just means that the DNC has poor security. Case in point, the former secretary of state sending or receiving top-secret emails from a private server at her home.

They don't have any proof that anything was hacked by the Russians. It is pretty funny that, all of a sudden, we are worried about cyber security. We weren't when Hillary was Sec State. We weren't when the secret server was discovered during the Benghazi investigation. Hell, we still aren't, except that somebody got caught and their emails are being exposed. All of a sudden it is a big deal.

Re: U.S. government officially accuses Russia of hacking campaign to interfere with e

The government (including political party bosses) is outraged (or at least very embarrassed) that it cannot keep secrets from being leaked to the people that it governs. The problem is obviously not enough government power to prevent any such transparency. ;)

When you want to get something done, you've got to do it yourself! Unless you have a propaganda machine.

No idea WTF this means.

Frankly, Trump supporters have aptly demonstrated that they are not the least bit concerned that a foreign government, an enemy of our country, is hacking into our election process. It's all good, as long as the Russians want Trump elected.

How good will y'all be in four years, when they decide they want a complete pacifist in the Oval Office, and simply hack into our election data and make it happen? After all, can't have a strong president who will lead NATO support when the Russians march into Estonia and Latvia now, can we?

I'm utterly disgusted.

Allow me to explain in painstaking detail.

The US media can put out what information is newsworthy. When the White House uses the Washington Post as a mouthpiece (or leaks an untrue story without proof), interesting things happen. The US government doesn't need to target Russia with "diplomatic" means, and its people can be galvanized for that cause. By polarizing this election, a great deal of energy is required by either side to win. Blaming Russia requires minimal effort, and is quite easy for anyone to do.

The US government has a purpose for disclosing this information so openly. Maybe they just did it in an effort to be more transparent. For some reason, what Russians do does not seem to be a state secret.

Just kicking the can down the road.

Even if true, and I don't know if it is or not, here's the question that we should be asking ourselves....

Would Russia be able to do any of this if our politicians were as "pure" as they claim to be? If they were truly as "pure" as they claim to be and above such reproach then anyone hacking into those servers would not be able to get anything "dirty" in the first place.

So yeah, Russia may be doing this, and they may be doing it to affect the election. I for one don't care. They're showing people just what these bozo's in office are actually doing and we should be voting accordingly. IE: Vote these corrupt assholes OUT of office.

Hacking the actual voting systems I am against. Why I support either closed systems or going back to paper. But, I'm not against them hacking and releasing info about the corruption that is in our government. I'm not against ANYONE that does that.

Why doesn't Obama just draw a red line in the internet? It has worked so well for him before

But, Clinto supporters are ok with Bill selling MERV technology to China. Now they can shoot down our satallites. Hillary signed off on a deal to sell Aerican uranium deposits to Russia. Plus her intentional mishandling of classified material (and yes, she broke the law). Spare us the faux outrage.

Gawd, the powers that be are downright desperate in making this claim.

With Hitlerly and Drumpf as the 2 candidates, the electoral system is exposed as the sham it is. The DNC was manipulating the process from the get go, and anybody not understanding that is not paying attention or dim.

How and why could or would the Russians want to 'manipulate' such a sordid and comical circus?

TPTB are angry that at the moment Russia appears successful in keeping Assad in office, and they are running a full court press of anti-Russian propaganda. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Sometimes laughing is better than crying, but I'm probably being an escapist, eh? ;)

I have no problem with that, which is why I support Snowen's leaking of the government spying that Bush and Obama are responsible for. What I have a problem with is Russia attempting to influence our elections. Yes, some of that information probably deserves to be leaked, but what I question are the motives.

Exactly. Russia isn't content with just leaking selective information about the candidate they know is most likely to lead NATO in resistance to Russia's territorial grabs, but they are also trying to hack into state election information in order to what... create false numbers? THIS is the story the media should be focused on, not the fact that once again Trump has proven what a narcissistic predatory pig he is. We already knew that!

Oh I have no doubt that their motives are completely self centered and aimed at furthering their own agenda. Doesn't mean that we can't take advantage of it to further our own agenda regardless of theirs. As the old saying goes, make lemonade out of lemons. ;)

When life tells me to make lemonade, I just throw the lemons back and say "Make your own damn lemonade".
