The Senate today voted 97-1 to override a veto from President Obama, for the first time, over a bill that would allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia for its alleged role in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The override attempt now heads to the House, where it is expected to pass later today — at which point the override goes into effect.

This bill is dumb in like ten different ways.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

They should have done this. Americans deserve to file suit and have their day in court.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

If this passes the house as expected Republicans may get to see Obama or both Clinton's perp walked. Just in a foreign country.

Democrats need not free Bush and Cheney will be in the same line.

There are a lot of people who could be screwed by this. The ultimate karma will be watching some of those who supported this defend themselves on court from out of country cases.

Well, granted most people already knew this, we learned both parties are full of idiots.

I kind of think it is pointless.Because lets say a judge sides with the victims of 9-11 and finds Saudi Arabia guilty. Who is going to make Saudi Arabia pay the victims of 9-11? I don't think any country is going to slap an embargo against Saudi Arabia or go to war.

They should have done this. Americans deserve to file suit and have their day in court.

I am not sure of the exact legal situation right now. But
I tend to agree that citizens should be allowed to sue foreign governments. If it is not generally legal, it is a bad idea to create a Lex Saudi Arabia, however. A special law is a bad idea for a number of reasons among them the precedent of retroactive law and the foreign affairs implications of framing a law specifically against a traditional partner.

Symbolic legislation at best.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

The facts of international law aside, anyone who seriously believes that the U.S. government would hold Saudi to the outcome of a lawsuit really hasn't been paying attention to the last 30 years of foreign policy. Saudi is untouchable. The fact that Obama vetoed the bill speaks wonders to that.

The bill is really stupid though... so I understand.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

It's a meaningless gesture in an election year, and you're only excited because Obama was against it.

Damn right...beating obama is a good thing...they spoiled his Shut Out!

It looks like it is more about truth telling than collecting on a future payout.

Well thats a first for Obama. Guess hes a lame duck now.

We just paid Iran billions that we owed a entirely differnt iranian govt. So I would say its possible. Just a matter of application of force.

97 to 1, so apparantly all were in agreement with little doubt.

Saudi Arabia has a significant amount of asets in the US which a court could decide to freeze or seize to pay any claims.
Saudi Arabia will not be happy and probably will threaten to stop buying US weapons and start to pull assets out of the US.

Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

Sometimes i think we'd be better off filling the senate with a hundred random kindergarteners.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

97 to 1, so apparently all were in agreement with little doubt.

And that 1 being Harry Reid, no surprise there.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

Obama is 100% right in this case. The Senate and House have acted stupidly. Their stupidity was bipartisan.

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

It's a meaningless gesture in an election year, and you're only excited because Obama was against it.

You are only defending it because Obama was for it.

Truthfully I don't have an opinion. I haven't studied the issue. At least I can wait until I know what I am talking about to decide. You haven't offered any argument against it. If you have one I would be real interested in whatever it was.
