Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill[W:145]

Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

WASHINGTON — Congress on Wednesday voted overwhelmingly to override a veto by President Obama for the first time, passing into law a bill that would allow the families of those killed in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to sue Saudi Arabia for any role in the plot.Democrats in large numbers joined with Republicans to deliver a remarkable rebuke to the president. The 97-to-1 vote in the Senate and the 348-to-77 vote in the House displayed the enduring power of the Sept. 11 families in Washington and the diminishing influence here of the Saudi government.
The new law, enacted over the fierce objections of the White House, immediately alters the legal landscape. American courts could seize Saudi assets to pay for any judgment obtained by the Sept. 11 families, while Saudi officials have warned they might need to sell off hundreds of billions of dollars in holdings in the United States to avoid such an outcome.

LOL really!? That would be so hilarious.

Congress Votes To Override President Obama's Sept. 11 Lawsuit Veto : NPR

"The override cleared the Senate earlier Wednesday, in a 97-1 vote in favor of the override, well above the two-thirds majority needed to overcome the president's objection. Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid cast the lone "no" vote. Sens. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., did not vote."

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

We may be about to see what "unintended consequences" are all about.

Makes me uncomfortable.

Because the US government can be sued for its acts of terrorism?

I think this would be wonderful.

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

I never thought i'd see congress come together to do something Obama was against and they'd be actually be in the right for it, but this is clearly it

His ties to the evil Saudi regime are unacceptable to begin with, but his veto lowered himself to their level. If anything, it should have been Saudi that was invaded alongside Afghan, not Iraq, and here he is protecting them even after evidence of their involvement becomes more clear

I hope it does damage this 'alliance,' because aside from maybe north korea, Saudi has the worst record on human rights on the planet

no, they're afraid gas costs will go up 10 cents or something

What "acts of terrorism"?

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen. Why veto this? The families will never see a penny from Saudi. Absurd.

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

What "acts of terrorism"?

Accidental bombings of hospitals, I mean this opens up families to sue the US for friendly fire deaths as well.

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

Will not matter, they will never see a dime, the proof is the hard part even in a civil court.

Aside from the issue of ever being able to collect on a foreign government.

I don't think the US ever paid any Vietnamese claims on operation ranch hand

Re: Senate Votes to Override President Obama's Veto of 9/11 Bill

The Senate today voted 97-1 to override a veto from President Obama, for the first time, over a bill that would allow the families of 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia for its alleged role in the 2001 terrorist attacks.

The override attempt now heads to the House, where it is expected to pass later today — at which point the override goes into effect.

The House also passed the override vote. No shut out for O! :D
They will never see a dime and it will end up hurting US citizens, be careful when you open Pandora's box, what comes out cannot be put back in when it bites you.
Are there Saudis guilty, absolutely but this will not be the way to deal with it. Good grief the same Congress passed a huge military sale to SA, does that makes some sort of f'n sense.

How exactly is an accident an act of terrorism?

I'm still waiting for the Vietnamese to pay the Cambodians and Laotians for violating their territorial integrity and causing them to become targets for US air strikes, but I'm not holding my breath....

I mean if your lying in a hospital and it gets bombed you probably would have a different opinion. Depends on your interpretation of that law which is exactly the problem.

It does open up a Pandora's box, but I am somewhat gladdened that we can finally bring the Saudis to task for all the terror groups they've been influencing.

Money is not the issue.

Truth is the issue and this government doesn't that widely known.

An accident is very different than an intentional attack, which is what terrorism is.

Again that's your interpretation. We the British downplayed bloody Sunday for years as self defense/ mistaken identity. Didn't mean we were right and again if a family in a foreign country feel different why shouldn't they sue?

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

What "acts of terrorism"?

Your government is at the top of the list of killing civilians all over the world - intentionally or not - as the world's cop and vigilante.

No other country comes even close.

Those "acts of terrorism". Or war crimes, if you prefer.

That's a much different situation; air strikes don't exactly have the same ability to check if individual is a combatant--- short of getting shot at--- that infantry can.

Those are neither acts of terrorism or war crimes. Don't where the hell you got it in your head that they were.

Re: Congress Votes to Override Obama Veto on 9/11 Victims Bill

Problem is, Saudi Arabia didn't play a direct part in the attacks. If this is successful, it opens up the US to responsibility for the actions of the proxy forces it has funded and enabled.
