Posted 5 minutes ago: Turkish military units attempt uprising, PM says - CNN.com

(CNN) — Some Turkish military units have attempted an uprising that will be not allowed to succeed, the country's prime minister said late Friday in a phone interview with Turkish broadcaster A Haber.

A report from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara said military-appearing jets had been flying low over the city and over Istanbul for about an hour

The military have historically been a force for secularism in Turkey. Erdogan and his AKP undermined that. Hopefully, a military-run govt would be secular.

If that happens, then the days of ISIS are numbered.

I sincerely can't see anything good coming out of this.

While I'm not particularly in tune with Turkish politics it's my understanding that their military is more or less charged with ensuring that the nation does not turn into an Islamist state. That may well be what's going on now as Erdogan had a good bit of history along those lines.

Depending on who is now in charge, this could be good. More moderate, sensible leaders are needed over Edrogen.

It's a good thing then that the Western militaries are in very close relations with the Turkish military, specifically the US military.

Weird unconfirmed reports saying Erdogan's plane had just left Turkish soil.

Based on the statements from the military so far, that's exactly why the military acted, to stop Erdogan, his power grabsm his restrictions on freedoms, and his pushing of Turkey toward being an Islamic state rather than a secular state.

The Turkish military is given (though disputed by some) certain powers by the constitution to safeguard certain elements of the Turkish Republic, including secularism and Unitarianism.

Turkey is a barbaric nation. They still deny their Genocide of the Armenians.

If that's true, then good. **** Erdogan.

That's what the statements from the military, so far, seem to be portraying. I hope they succeed. Erdogan is a threat to stability in that region, and a thorn in the ass of NATO to boot.

Ataturk airport taken over by the military.
Chief of staff of the Turkish military taken hostage by the military.

Are you happy with this news? I know the PM is ****, but still......

No I am not. Nor am I a supporter of the present Caliph. He has a large dose of megalomania.
He set up many in the Military for false charges, show trials and most were eventually cleared of all charges.

He then began a campaign of shutting down any and all dissent- witness the press as 1 clear example.
That along with throwing people in prison on trumped up charges.

Started a war again with the Kurd's when a peace deal was within his grasp. All so he thought he could gain enough seats to change the Constitution.

Has usurped powers of the PM, and transferred them to himself as President. All are illegal.

His support for Islamist's is not in doubt and that is the path he has taken, trappings of an Islamist State.
A clear supporter of the Muslim Brotherhood and other radical Islamist's.

Allowed members of AQ and other Orgs to remain on Turkish soil
Many may not be aware of the support that Erdogan provided to radical Islamist's.

US strikes al Qaeda’s ‘Khorasan Group’ in Syria | The Long War Journal

The US struck senior al Qaeda leaders in Syria twice this week. “These airstrikes were focused on targeting key Al Qaeda leaders who pose a threat to the US, our allies and our national security interests,” CENTCOM announced today. CENTCOM added that the slain jihadists were “core” al Qaeda members.

The first airstrike killed Abu Firas al Suri, a longtime al Qaeda veteran who served on Al Nusrah Front’s shura (advisory) council and was also the group’s spokesman for a time.

Jihadists on social media identified one of those killed in the second bombing as Rifai Ahmed Taha Musa, a veteran Egyptian jihadist who first worked with Osama bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri in the 1980s and 1990s. Musa was released in the wake of the Egyptian uprising that overthrew President Hosni Mubarak. He eventually fled Egypt, making his way to Turkey and Syria.
