Corker withdraws as potential Trump running mate

“Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), the chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee who has recently emerged as a finalist in the search for Donald Trump’s running mate, told The Washington Post in an interview Wednesday that he has taken himself out of consideration for the position.

Corker said that he informed the presumptive Republican presidential nominee of his decision during their day together on Tuesday, when the senator had a series of meetings with campaign officials in New York and then flew with Trump to an evening rally in North Carolina. “There are people far more suited for being a candidate for vice president, and I think I’m far more suited for other types of things,” Corker said in an extensive phone interview where he repeatedly praised Trump and said he is eager to serve as an informal adviser to the candidate…………

As they sat close together on Trump’s Boeing 757, Corker recalled telling Trump about how he’s more policy-oriented than political and how even though he has become friendly with Trump, he did not feel comfortable stepping fully into the role of political attack dog or rousing speechmaker.

Corker’s withdrawal reduces by one those on the “short list”………WP is reporting that Newt has now risen to the top of the list………..But one can never know given Trump’s impulsiveness….
It will be interesting to see who he picks as a running mate and why that person was chosen

Corker is pretty sensible. In fact he always comes across as thoughtful and reasonable. I doubt he wanted to be on the most racist ticket since George Wallace.

Perhaps Trump will end up with John Tyler's Vice President.

Corker is garbage, he's the one that helped push through the Iran deal. He needs to be sent packing in the next election. Trump can do a lot better than that fool.

Like who?

Newt was my man for Trump since the beginning. Since before he became presumptive.

Corker GONE? Say it ain't so.

It won't be long before the Queen of Treason slips into abject obscurity. Trump will sweep even if he picks Charley Manson as a running mate. Corker was just a decoy to keep all the commie news rags at bay. EZPZ, lemon squeeeezy.

Why's that?
Early-on in the primary when the GOP was throwing candidate after candidate at Trump, I felt Newt coming over to Trump would open the door to splintering the GOP resistance.

Newt has big-time gravitas and bonafides within the party.

In optics: He is the ultimate insider portraying himself as the ultimate outsider, so he'll cement Trump's outsider status with his base.

Politically: At the same time he will help coalesce the GOP establishment around Trump, and can act as an access-point to Trump for the GOP.

In tactical terms during the election: He is a great attack dog.

In tactical terms post election: He is the consummate deal-maker & insider with the highest legislative chops of anyone - he's a former Speaker of the House! He will greatly facilitate Trump's ability to promote a legislative agenda.

Plus, I think the guy's personality, style, and mannerism have similarity to Trump's.

Thanks for that. I really needed a good laugh today.

Have you ever taken a look at the map projection of electoral votes?

You may want to check it out before saying Trump will sweep...........

I would liken Newt as another Dick Cheney helping of the candidate pick a VP selection...........And strange as it is to believe.............Newt come with more baggage then Cheney ever had

I don't care what anybody says, your post is a solid assessment of the positive aspects Newt brings to the table. Not only does he have impeccable conservative credentials AND a proven track record(balanced budget)but he is widely loved and respected in many of the so-called swing states.

Thank you for the compliment, but it's not very hard to jot down what is true and easily apparent.

From the get-go I also thought Biden-Warren was the unifying ticket for the Dems , but it was not meant to be.

If you love politics, you can admire the process even if you may not necessarily equate yourself with the candidate or party. Similar to admiring a sports team's skills and teamwork, even as the beat yours.

I understood.........as was my reply

We need an approved sarcasm font.

The above does not cut it

Your sports analogy is dead nuts on.

Another thing that makes Newt such an extremely powerful asset is that "he's got game." If one of the little lefty hacks tries to air some of his dirty laundry, he'll hand them their head AND their axx. He is as good a spokeperson and statesman as he is a brass knuckled street fighter. The boy's got range.

It would be very easy for him to keep the likes of a known Islamist sympathizer on the ropes virtually all the time. Hillary already looks like the whore who stole the john's wallet. Trump, who I secretly refer to as W.C. Fields, Jr., could then globe trot, schmooze, and tell jokes. We already love him, as much for his bombast, as for his political naivete, but everybody knows they'll be voting for The Donald....it's just so much fun playing his game and acting like Jersey cabbies. Newt will just make it easy for Donald to be Donald. I love the way he keeps jambing it their collective ear. I'm glad I don't have shares of CNN.

Oh well, the Fall Classic will end just as the Main Event begins. It's always fun, isn't it?
