Feds join probe after George Mason University students arrested, one with bomb-making materials | Fox News

Federal investigators have joined the probe into three George Mason University students who were arrested last week after a search of their dorm turned up drugs and materials that could be used for bomb making, according to the school's police department.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is taking part in the investigation because a "small amount" of bomb-making material was found Wednesday inside a dorm room at the Virginia school, Capt. Brian Cozby, of George Mason University's Department of Police and Public Safety, told FoxNews.com Tuesday.

The names of the adult students are not being released until investigators confirm "these individuals aren't linked to something else," Cozby said.

From reading the article and what the cops say they found, it sounds to me like a few potheads were making a potato cannon and not some sinister bomb, which would also explain the "fire shooting out of a window" as well. However, I could very well be wrong, and the guys were making a bomb from PVC pipe, which would result in a very weak explosion given how fast the PVC would fail not allowing the explosion to reach maximum compression like it would in an iron or steal pipe.

Two arrested for drug and alochol related charges? Im guessing that explain the "green leafy material" (AKA marijuana) and I'm guessing they were both underage and found with booze in their dorm.

Yeah, my first impression when I heard "George Mason University" was some dumb kids were making bootleg alchohol or some other drug related offense.

I had a buddy in college that made his own bong from PVC and melted it the first time he used it because he was toasted from the weed combined with the Polyvinylchloride fumes that he just kept the fire going (he used a plumbers soldering torch on a small propane tank for the heat) - it was dangerous, but damned funny to watch.

Copper or galvanized pipe are much better.

This is a federal case? C'mon. This is a couple of nutty college kids smoking pot and fooling around.

Search warrants say police found a leafy green substance, match books, shaved match heads, a mortar and pestle, lighter fluid, hand sanitizer, candles and a PVC pipe.

The documents say investigators reported the items could be combined to make explosives.

"Green leafy substance"? Must be residue from making floral arrangements. Sure.

Now, it is possible to make explosives by shaving match heads. I know this, because I did it myself as a stupid teenager. You simply collect the shavings, concentrate it into a container of some sort, then set it off by setting fire or hitting it with a hammer. It's easy. I used to use empty rifle shells, put match shavings in, crimped the end down, then hit it with a hammer. It makes a very satisfying bang, quite loud. When a piece of metal found its way into my arm, the idea that what I was doing may not be very safe found its way into my as yet undeveloped brain and I found other forms of amusement.

This just doesn't sound like terrorism or an attempt to blow up the dormitory to me.
