U.S. South Carolina House Approves Bill to Remove Confederate Flag

Not in the U.S., in ''some countries''. The U.S. still has free speech, as do their forums.

True, but let them tell it, and forcing the removal of a symbol that led the battles to preserve the institution of human trafficking and slavery, and we lost free speech yesterday.

It will come I think, slowly but surely, a bit at a time.

But it's not political correctness. It's the right thing to do, and it's done. Btw, the SC legislature is very heavily republican, and they took that flag down.

Like I said, they caved to political correctness. If they had a spine they would have told whoever was yelling this time to go fly a kite

They hadn't caved to political correctness for the past 15 years or so during all the economic boycotts, and the loss of the privilege of hosting many collegiate and pro sporting events because of the flag being on state property. They just told the NAACP, and some national sports organizations to "go fly a kite"

Political and economic pressure on the state to take down the flag is nothing new, it's been going on for years. Don't you think maybe this time it had a little something to do with the legislature, and the public, changing their mind?

That does happen, not everyone is so indoctrinated into a particular line of thought that they can't (or never try to) see past their own blinders.

Yet one mentally ill nut murders 9 people for no reason and all of a sudden the flag is to blame. Can't convince me that someone wasn't behind that sudden move.

So the representatives of your party let you down. I'm sorry.

Yep, a majority of republican legislators. Now, take down your avatar, hear?

NO! Like I said, can't convince me there wasn't a lobbyist behind that move, since no one seemed to care about the flag before. Interesting though the NCAA kept boycotting SC over the flag, yet they won't go after Georgia whose flag is identical to the First National flag.

I thought that Georgia took down the confederate battle flag some years ago? Public pressure was behind the move. And it's certainly NOT true that nobody's cared about the flag until this. Folks have complained about it for years, it's just that the image of that murderous young man with his venerated flag that represents oppression to so many had the effect that so many wanted for some time now.

Pretty sure we've already demonstrated that's not true, just overly simplistic resentment.

Just because people offended by that flag lived quietly under it for generations doesnt mean it was right for the govt to fly it...Its being recognized as a symbol of slavery and racism isnt new....otherwise that psycho Roof wouldnt have fastened onto it in the first place.

post 29, to you, in this thread....yet you never responded.

I was only discussing the US.

Dont know why you think extended beyond the US, as this is basically about free speech.

I never saw that one that's why. Rosa Parks was right to do what she did, so were the 4 NC A&T students who sat in at the Woolworths in Greensboro (its now the International Civil Rights Museum). The South was not perfect, but we were the way we were back then. However the Confederate flag is part of the heritage of the South and should not be erased.

Georgia did change their flag. However they kept the Confederate flag heritage by making it identical to the First National flag. Also just because people wanted the flag gone does not mean anyone was gonna cave to political correctness run amuck until a nutcase murdered 9 people for no reason.

Wow, between this and the smoking thread, I can tell you have no ability to understand analogies. It is a useless posting convention in your case, and I will note it in the future.

The point of my post re: Rosa Parks was that her single action acted as a tipping point for action but was not the sole reason. Same with the bastard that shot those 9 people.

He is not the reason there is controversy over the flag and it's meaning to people didnt change overnight. That existed for long before his idiocy.

Anything? Did you get it this time?

No one states to erase it. But it has no role on or in Govt. Buildings- Govt. property.
Place it in a museum.
And for those that have not mentioned it yet, leave the Confederate war memorials alone.
You cannot erase history.

Yet the flag was flying at the Confederate memorial, so what was the problem?

Haven't grasped the concept of political correctness run amuck yet?

Yes, that's what they called it over the outcry when Rosa Parks wouldnt move to the back of the bus too. :doh''

You continue to prove my point re: analogies.

Not everything is political correctness! There really are a lot of people that despise the symbolism of the confederate flag, and by no means are they all black. And those people aren't leaning on PC, they're (we're) leaning on legislators to do the right thing. And so they are.............mostly. ;)

For no reason? Are you nuts? He gave a very clear reason. If you love that battle flag so much why didn't you fight to keep the Dixiecrats and segregationists from using it to mean racial hatred and suppression? They are the ones that "changed" its meaning and that is what got it banned.
