GOP leaders fear damage to party

:shock::shock::roll:

The head of the Republican National Committee, responding to demands from increasingly worried party leaders, spent nearly an hour Wednesday on the phone with Donald Trump, urging the presidential candidate to tone down his inflammatory comments about immigration that have infuriated a key election constituency.

The call from Chairman Reince Priebus, described by donors and consultants briefed on the conversation and confirmed by the RNC, underscores t
he extent to which Trump has gone from an embarrassment to a cause for serious alarm among top Republicans in Washington and nationwide.

Trump loves $. He isn't (really?) this stupid is he? He is hurting his short-term profits, what is his long game here? Is he secretly trying to sabotage the GOP?

Trump is putting Republicans in a tough spot. If this forum is anything to go by, many people on the right sympathize with his comments. However, if you think Trump's statements are anywhere near being "right", you probably weren't going to vote for a Democrat in 2016. That said, Republicans are starting to become worried about the Hispanic vote. Trump doesn't have enough pull to convert people, however his comments can keep quite a few people away from the Republican party in 2016.

It will definitely be interesting watching the RNC pull this juggling act until Trump bows out. On one hand, borderline ****s like Coulter and Trump going after Hispanics, and on the other the RNCs push to make "inroads with Hispanics". Which will they pick? Who knows. I just know that what they do in the next year could very well determine how the Hispanic vote goes for the next 20-30 years.

He isn't stupid at all. He is straightforward. He speaks the truth as he sees it, unlike politicians. He says what he believes unlike politicians. His problem is not so much the content of what he says but rather the style with which he says it. He won't win any elections but he will get his message out.

Unfortunately, a meaningful percentage of illegal immigrants from Mexico are criminals or commit crimes and that percentage is enabled by the open border policy. That isn't opinion nor is it a slam against Mexicans or other latinos. It is simply fact and a plainly obvious one. But a lot of people don't want to hear it because they want votes after they engineer the "path to citizenship."

His "message" is one of a pig-ignorant, egocentric blowhard.

There is no doubt he is an egocentric blowhard. But the message is fact.

Maybe this will motivate the republican party to bust up the 2 party system...maybe Santa Clause is real.

I thought I would offer a translation of the quote Hatuey has below his posts because it is an appealing sentiment:

"Había una vez, un rey que se quedó sin castillo y un mendigo le dió abrigo, vino, pan y cama. El rey, le quizo pagar con un anillo y el mendigo dijo: Págame con una buena acción mañana. Hay quien comparte hasta su pobreza, lo material no le interesa y eso si que es tener riqueza."

Once upon a time there was a king who was away from his castle and a beggar gave him a coat, wine, bread and a bed. The king wanted to pay him with a ring and the beggar said "pay me by doing a good deed tomorrow." There are those who share despite their poverty. Material things don't interest them and that is true wealth.

This post, like Trump's blather, shows the problem with most anti-immigrant rhetoric- it is opinion being presented as fact. All through history a minority has been picked as the scapegoat for a nation's ills. From Armenians in Turkey to Jews in Germany, a people have been picked to be attacked. Sad thing is some very otherwise decent folks go along with the attacks.

Trump may speak what he thinks is true, (I can't help but see a cold blooded gambit being played) however so has every other demi-gawd, from Hitler to the guy on the street corner screaming the end is nigh! And for the record Trump is far more like the later than the former, He is no where near the public speaker Hitler was.

And Trump is still polling well. The racist leg of the GOP is wide, and runs deep.

In 2008 I was no fan of Obama, I hardly knew who he was. But after he got elected I thought, he might be a good change. It might be good to show the world how far we've come, and to have a different face in the WH. I was naive, I didn't realize how racist parts of this country are, just look at Trump's comments and how many Republicans are rallying around him. And you know they hate the black guy in the WH even more.

Correction. It is anti ILLEGAL immigration rhetoric. My comment was fact. Sorry. I'm not attacking anything but the open border policy. Don't mistake what I say with what you think I say. We live in a country of immigrants. Immigrants have made our country great. Illegal immigration, on the other hand, has created some problems. If you can't see that then we'll just disagree. You folks need to stop purposely confusing immigration with illegal immigration.

And Trump is still polling well. The racist leg of the GOP is wide, and runs deep.

It is not racism. It is an understanding that illegal immigration causes problems that could be avoided if we chose to fix it. Why is racism a stupid excuse for nearly everything on the left? It's just nuts.

Why do the people on the right, always, always says it isn't racism, when most of the time it is?

Days after that kid killed 9 in a church many cons were saying it wasn't racism that caused that kid to kill, some on Fox said they were shot because they were Christians.

Face it. The GOP has a problem. Dealing with it is better than ignoring it.

BTW I'm all for fixing the immigration problem. But calling immigrants names and calling them criminals isn't the way to address the problem.

Because most of the time it isn't. It is having a problem with ILLEGAL immigration.

I watch Fox news and never heard that. All I heard was that the murders were racially motivated and proof was provided. If someone said they were shot because they were christians, then that would have been a minority opinion for sure.

Face it. The GOP has a problem. Dealing with it is better than ignoring it.

No question about that. The GOP has the same problem with the Democrat party. Both are political parties and political parties are definitely a problem.

BTW I'm all for fixing the immigration problem. But calling immigrants names and calling them criminals isn't the way to address the problem.

But Trump didn't call them names. He described the behavior of some of them. You need to try to look past your partisanship.

Fox News: Charleston shooting is an attack on faith, not race

Yeah. It's a major news network. They said it and as far as I know never retracted it, or apologized.

But Trump didn't call them names. He described the behavior of some of them.

“When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

You got it backwards. He's saying the majority are bad and only some, he assumes, are good.

Trump is the GOP's id run amok.

How can they expect to win if Republicans can't hide what they're truly feeling and what they really want to do?

Yeah, it is going to put a light on the immigration debate on the Republican side and it will be fun to watch. The immigration issue is a big one on the Republican side. More flip flopping than a fish on land lately. I think it is a good thing that politicians might be forced to actually take a stand on an issue. Most of the candidates right now, on both sides, are going to need surgery from all the contortions they are going through.

Yeah. It's a major news network. They said it and as far as I know never retracted it, or apologized.

I read the transcript. Nowhere did anybody say it wasn't a racially motivated murder. The pastor said it was too bad it occurred in a church because it plays to war on Christianity. I don't think anybody needs to apologize.

You got it backwards. He's saying the majority are bad and only some, he assumes, are good.

He didn't use the word majority at all. It is your word because it fits your political agenda. The huge majority of illegal Mexican immigrants are uneducated, unskilled and poor. Yes, they are trying to better their life in America but they are what they are and they are not Mexico's best. That is what Trump said. They do bring drugs and they do bring crime. Not all of them, not a majority of them but these are certainly symptoms of the illegal immigration problem.

I'm a latino myself. Spanish is my native language. I understand fully what motivates illegal immigrants. I'm a huge supporter of immigration but not illegal immigration. The left supports it not because it is good for America but because it means votes after they complete the "path to citizenship." If the left wants to get more support for it they should pursue a policy of a pathway to legal immigrant status. That takes the voting out of the equation. I think most people on the right would support legal immigrant status for those illegals who have not commited crimes and if we move toward legal immigration instead. The whole thing is so transparent. It is pure politics but it shouldn't be.

The Republican leadership needs the political courage (and foresight) to bar him from the nominating process as it did with David Duke in 1992. If not, it has only itself to blame voters tie the Party to Trump's deplorable rhetoric.

The DailyKos post of Media Matters post involved a conversation that occurred shortly after the killing, and before any facts were known. Geeze, can these Progressive Machine flugelhorns get any more laughable?

As the tens of thousands of victims of illegal aliens can testify, Trump was 100% accurate in his statement. Why not come to Southern California and see for yourself. Perhaps your vantage point in the Northeast allows you to stay away from the truth.

Even though it was reported right from the start what this kid said while he was shooting people and everyone knew he said he was shooting them because they were black, NOT because they were Christian. The Fox people said the shooting might have been because they're Christian and in a Christian church. If you refuse to add 2 and 2, that's OK.

Trump didn't differentiate between illegal and legal. He lumped them all together, including the ones already here.

And with all due respect stuff the this is all the Dems fault because they are looking for votes BS. The GOP is a VERY business friendly party and businesses love both legal, and illegal immigrants because of the low wages they get paid, and they help keep overall wages down. History shows that even when the GOP has the power and the WH, they don't do a damn thing to fix the mess. But unfortunately they talk and talk, and throw their base red meat, and the lemming GOP voters believe that the Republicans actually want to fix the problem. They don't, they never did. even when they had their chances. They don't want to fixit because their business friends and donors don't want it fixed.

Yeah there's no immigrants in the Northeast. It's lilly white here. LOL

psssssst. My neighbors are Mexican. Cross the street there's a woman from Ireland, her neighbors are from Greece. Italians kitty corner from them. Germans, Poles and all the rest are neighbors too. It's a regular UN here, always has been. But yeah I don't know what the hell is going on.

Now I'm sure you are going to say you are only talking about illegal immigrants. There's plenty of them here too. And I agree something needs to be done, it's a mess. But you Cons got to take the partisan, everything is Obama and the Dems fault glasses off and realize the GOP is just as guilty. They had many, many chances to fix the mess, but they don't. A couple days ago I posted an example of even in Texas, where they want to pass bills that have tough penalties for employers who hire illegals, but they back off because as one GOP politician in TX said, if they don't pass the bill with exceptions a large portition of Tx. population would end up in jail.

Instead of just nodding blindly when GOP politicians talk about immigration, hold their feet to the fire. Ask them why in the past they did nothing. Ask them if the will buck their business donors who like and want cheap labor immigrants.

I live in an area (i Will not disclose too much), in Berks County Pa.
google that as you choose

I live in a semi-detached (so I have a direct neighbor)

that family is
4 generation deep , mixed euro ancestrty "white"

the house on the other side is
4th,5th, and 6th generation descendents of freed slaves

across the street is
nascar fans.... honestly cant figure anything else out, they're gone at 4 AM, and back at 12-1AM .
{while I'm in bed}

for a "rural" "white" county, we have a very diverse subdivision.

Though not "neighbors",
in the past 24 months, a Latino family, and a Chinese family have moved in as well

Honestly, not that we do a A LOT, but the community spirit has never been louder, or more
vibrant while I lived here.

The headline would be honest if it was "GOP leaders fear Trump to force them to take an actual stand."

A hint that the RNC's appeasement of Trump's candidacy out of fear of a third party run may not spare the Republican Party from an independent Trump candidacy should Trump lose the nomination (as I expect he will):

In a wide-ranging, 30-minute interview with The Washington Post, the billionaire real estate mogul and reality-television star also said he has serious concerns about other GOP candidates and refused to commit to supporting the eventual nominee in the general election...

Pressed about whether he would back the Republican ticket if he fails to win the nomination himself, Trump left the door open for a third-party bid of his own. “I would have to see who the nominee is,” he said.

Trump vows long campaign, won

A courageous choice is one that is made when the risks-benefits of maintaining or changing a position are not fully known. A choice made after it becomes evident a position is not viable and there is no alternative but to shift position is not a courageous choice. The former is an example of an act of leadership. The latter is an example of a lack of leadership.

That's a good point...Trump is the vindictive sort so if he was kept out of the race or felt mistreated I could see him running as a 3rd party
