Nikki Haley: 'I could not look my kids in the face and justify that flag' | US news | The Guardian
How could it happen that a flag which has always been a symbol of love for the South now represents racism and hatred? I feel sorry for those people who have been sticking confederate flags on their license plates since forever. Now they are all considered bigots and nazis. Maybe it's time to chill up a bit and just forget about one mentally disabled racist who used it as a symbol of his racial hatred? Because it will only distance the southerners from the rest of the country.

Because the Confederate South is KNOWN for its role in slavery, segregation, and racial derision.

That's how it went down in the history books - Southerners who cling to it surely are smart enough to know that.

Anyone who chose to use that flag as a way to denote simple southern life did so foolishly since it's basically the battle flag for slavery. It's time now to admit that, put the flag away, and move forward.

She'd have had some credibility had she done this say, last year.

Politicians are cowards. There's really nothing else to say about it.

Not even close. The Confederate flag (all 5 of them)_ flew over exactly 0 slave ships. Even the North had slaves. It took the 13th amendment to free ALL of the slaves since Lincoln's joke of an "emancipation proclamation" only freed slaves in the South. The slave trade had been going on forever, and the north only bothered with it when they realized that if the South kicked their butts like they were already doing, then westward expansion was going to be a huge problem for the north because the southern states would expand even further west and then the north would be a supreme disadvantage.

Governor Haley has no authority to remove or alter the flag over the war memorial. Only a 2/3rds majority of both houses of the State Legislature can do that.

Her opinion is simply her opinion. It might carry more weight than Joe Citizen's, but no more authority.

Lemme guess you don't understand the slavery in the North also?

What was she doing the other 4 years of her tenure?

Let me guess....shes going to run for POTUS too? All aboard the PC bull**** train.

My state's idiot of a governor with his head up his ass is trying to do away with the Sons of Confederate Veterans license plate, all because the moron governor of Virginia wanted to after stupid SCOTUS ruled that Texas could. They are ALL politicians and morons!

Why did the south secede?

Does that go for everyone else as well?

Absolutely, Amazon, Walmart, TV Land and anybody else jumping on this PC band wagon. They all should have purged this racist symbol long ago and on their own.

In all fairness, the issue was not on ANYONE's mental radar until a few days after the Charleston shootings, when a few activists and the media decided to turn the issue into a circus and act like it was some kind of immediate-action-crisis.

Back in 2000, after years of protests and boycotts, the SC State Legislature decided to move the flag from the Statehouse dome to the Confederate War Memorial nearby. This was considered a reasonable compromise by most SC'linians... it moved the flag to a place of historical relevance and quieted the raging controversy to a large degree.

Up until the media-manufactured furor post-Charleston, if you'd polled the SC citizenry about the flag half of them would have forgotten entirely and 40-70% of the rest would have said "It's good where it is."

So there it was. Most SC'ians were ok with it. The flag wasn't killing anybody or oppressing anyone. Nobody was talking about it. The flag wasn't interfering with budget issues or keeping the roads from being repaired (a HUGE issue in SC recently).

It just wasn't a ****ing issue, ok?

Most SC'ians could have given a rat's ass at the time about the flag. We're more concerned about jobs, the dayum fracked-up roads, and local politics.

Why touch a previously-controversial issue that was slumbering peaceably and on NOBODY's mind or lips? What politician with a lick of sense is going to do that UNLESS he or she sees a way to make political hay out of it?

It's no wonder she left it alone up to this point.

I'm disappointed that she's let pressure from outside the state push her into her premature declaration about the flag, and yeah makes me wonder if she's positioning for a run at POTUS, but as politicians go her behavior isn't atrocious, merely predictably coming down firmly on the side of self-interest.

She can't run for Gov again so I guess she wants to go national...

Where there other major issues besides slavery?

The Stars and Stripes, the flag of the North flew for over 80 years while Slavery was legal.

Allot longer than the Confederate battle flag.

Seems like the North only seemed to have an issue with Slavery right when the South wanted to secede.

Hmmmm..what a coincidence.

The Flag of Britain flew on the slave ships that brought slaves over.

Should those flags be retired too ?

The flags of Britain, Portugal and Spain ( among other ) flew on the ships that brought slaves to the new world.

Are those " racist symbols " too ?

Exactly. I understand why she's doing, but I still think it's a cowardly "sell out" move all the same.

The simple fact of the matter is that what we have now is a fair compromise. The battle flag isn't flying over the Capital. It's flying over a war memorial. There's actually a Black History monument on the opposite side of the grounds as well.

The way things are now represents a perfectly equitable reflection of our state's actual history, culture, and demographics. The changes being proposed frankly seem to be a Hell of a lot more about deliberately spitting in the face of Southern culture, and enforcing "P.C." cultural supremacy than anything else.

No, because under Lincoln and the Stars and Stripes we also abolished slavery.

Belatedly, reluctantly, and hesitantly.... because it wasn't the foremost cause of the war. The Union/Fedgov vs State Sovereignty/seperatism was. Lincoln said as much.
